Speculative mystery writer and game designer. Writes about the future, hope, and murder, often in the same story. Here I'm mostly going to be posting about #mystery #writing with a dash of #futurism. I love positive #tech that aims to help the world and not tempt us to exploit the masses. May talk about #games from time to time. One day, I'll make a game designer detective.

🏳️‍🌈 My characters are #queer because I'm queer and I'm not sorry about it. Pronouns are he/him or whatever you want.

Hey #Mastodon, this time I have a #blogpost about you! This week I decided to talk about all of my experiences in the first few weeks of using this social media, specifically as a #mystery #writer. Special mention to several #writingprompt hashtags that I've found, and what I like or what I wish there was more of here on this network.

43—Does your MC have an ex that they would ever consider dating again?

Ash hasn't had a lot of relationships and too many of them remind Ash of the past, so it never goes anywhere. In a character sheet exercise for a class, I considered giving Ash an abusive boyfriend/guardian, but it just felt too much like adding trauma when he's already got plenty. I think that Ash leaves relationships more often because of invented reasons. No one's been bad to him.

Aug 17 #WritingWonders—MC POV: What’s a deal-breaker in a friendship and/or relationship?

Ash: I know it's a bit unfair for the guy who can't tell you what his job is, but people who keep secrets from one another are right out. Also, anyone who uses the pressure of a relationship to get what they want. Basically, don't hide, and don't manipulate.

And don't pester me about my parents.

41—If your MC taught as a career, what would they teach?

Ash is terrified about teaching, but would probably teach research methods. It's what he was taught and it's what he does every day.

Vincent, one of my POV characters in the other project is a professor of literature, and Anthony will be showing the security ropes to one of the residents at the facility.

Aug 15 #WritingWonders—What parts of your world would you recommend a tourist stay away from?

So, Metro isn't a terrible place to live, but it's not a fun place to visit either. It's got a little bit of a night life, but it's hot all year round. Crime's gotten better, and major crime in East Central is a bit slow, but it's still there. You'd probably do better visiting one of the other big cities, at least until the green works projects are finished making the city more friendly.

Last night, I was out around sunset, and I realized I had missed the little period between night and sunset where the sun is below the horizon, but the edge of the sky in the west is a yellow-brown. The rest of the sky is a pale, dark blue, but it's like there is a crown of light where the sun has rested.
I have just made a ridiculous amount of links to Mastodon writerly hashtags as part of my next blog post 😅 It would be nice if it were easier to link to things on Mastodon. I'm linking to them on my instance, but I know that is annoying if you're on another instance and want to follow a hashtag. But, there's really no way around it, I suppose.

40—MC POV: Which do you prefer, sunrise or sunset?

Ash: If you've never seen a desert sunset, you're missing out. It starts out as blue as anything can be, then a little grey before turning orange. And yeah, everybody's got orange sunsets, but we go beyond that to this deep copper color, then into pink. Have you ever seen a pink sky? We've got them for a moment before the purples and blacks come in. Pink and orange catch on the underside of clouds until the stars come out.

In the facility, the absolutely best place to visit is the park in the commons. It's a lush, green place in an otherwise sterile environment. There are benches and small trees that go all the way up to the domed ceiling, which brings in sunlight from the gardens above. There's even a small play set for all the kids at the facility. It's the highlight of Anthony's tours. Everyone gets distracted by it!
