COVID is spiking right now. People get injured, disabled and die from this every day.

Would something like rsync work to mirror the data with compression in transit?

Or maybe substitute dar for tar [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dar_(disk_archiver)] ?

@pronoiac is this archiving a large object that needs to be split up or more like piping many objects to manageably sized tarballs? Or staging an archive on a nearly full device to archive elsewhere?

For the last you can pipe tar, zipping along the way, to a network device so you don’t ever have to have your source and archive at the same place at the same time.
