Linux believer. Ham radio operator and rosin smoke adorer.
My son bought a second-hand Windows 11 PC for games, and has been having BSOD issues with the graphics card since he got it. Out of desperation he tried installing Bazzite on it, which I encouraged, but was also trying not to get his hopes up, telling him that the some things might not work. But he reports that "absolutely everything works better than Windows".
I suggested he use KDE for the desktop, and he is blown away about how good everything looks, and how easy the user experience is. He has used Linux for a bit probably 7 or 8 years ago when he used a salvaged laptop at uni that had Ubuntu on it, and he remembers that being a bit janky and frustrating, but now he's decided that he'll wipe the Windows partition and stay with Linux.
So keep it up, clever people that are making Linux distros and software, you're winning.

Interesse? → [email protected]

As someone on whom considerable amounts of energy have been spent to make him somewhat intelligent, I can now claim I can offer AGI at 1 ‰ of the financial effort that OpenAI and Microsoft need:

The moment someone gives me 100 mio. dollar, I'm fulfilling my definition of having reached general intelligence.

Considering this is a 99.9 % more efficient approach than Altman offers, I'm expecting VC offerings to absolutely annihilate my inbox the moment this post goes live.

So far, I've only really been involved in SSB, FM, and CW, but from now on, I'm going to make it a rule to boycott proprietary modes. Amateur radio should be open.

And I also consider modes whose developers disregard the GPL and do not publish the source code to be proprietary, just saying. #hamradio #foss

A few weeks ago, Michelle @abraxas3d visited us. She wrote a very nice report on "A day at Dwingeloo", detailing some of our recent experiments. The full story is at https://www.openresearch.institute/2025/11/12/a-day-at-dwingeloo/

Did you know? If you type "-ai" at the end of your Google searches, the AI summaries/overviews are not generated. Another option is to add a “fucking” word to your Google search to turn off AI summaries.

A half-wave dipole for 20 m also covers 30 and 40 m with a tuner. Use it for 60 or 80 m? Bad things start to happen.

Short dipoles are attractive for city dwellers like myself! But to feed them, high voltages AND fairly high currents are required. Losses become an issue.

I developed FLOSS Python code to run nec2 antenna simulations automatically. I showcased it studying relevant aspects of dipoles as they become shorter and shorter.

Good fun. I learned a thing or two.

Antenna simulation driver showcase

I provide a Python package antenna_simulation_driver. When you are here, I assume that you already knew that and have a notion what that is about. If you don’t, I recommend you head over to that proj
