Photographing #July4th #fireworks this year? Try focus-pulling: twist your lens' focus ring mid-exposure for some surreal results.

A few tips:
1: Open up your aperture as much as you can for more bokeh.

2. Zoom in: It's tempting to shoot ultra-wide, but by zooming in, you'll fill more of the frame with otherworldly results.

3: Twisting in-out/out-in focus quickly is tough. Make marks on your focus ring/lens (I use masking tape) so you can clearly see when you reach ∞

This almost isn't even a fair comparison because visibility through the wildfire smoke was *so* bad today.

The left photo was taken late last spring. The right photo was taken this morning #ChicagoWX #chicago #weather #wildfires

Last night was absolutely gorgeous. I don’t fly my drone much, let alone during blue hour, but conditions were perfect for a training mission.

I hope you had a nice Memorial Day weekend full of fun, relaxation, and reflection ✌🏼

My, my, mammatus! What a show. When the light is "weird" around sunset, it's always a good idea to get your camera ready. I had my gear set expecting some lightning, instead, Chicago was treated to an insane mammatus cloud display on the backside of the storm system. We see less of these than we do lightning strikes. Here are a few of my favorites. I wasn't even sure how to edit them; the colors were so vivid and out of the ordinary #weather #mammatus #photography
I knew rain was in the forecast tonight, but I didn't expect to catch any ⚡️- especially before sundown. This is an interesting image. It's a composite of three lighting frames...of the same bolt. The lightning flashed and pulsed for nearly half a second and my camera caught the bolt's evolution in three sequential 1/8 second frames. Using my tilt-shift, I then shifted my lens down in order to catch a train and add more foreground context #Photography #Weather
Parallax - I took these two frames in quick succession while passing by One Chicago in a helicopter. By flipping between each frame, the slight change in distance gives this image the appearance of depth and dimensionality. #Chicago #Photography #Architecture

Mother Nature dropped some massive lightning bolts onto Chicago last night #ILwx

Cracked open a geode today and this chunk looks like an oyster shell full of diamonds.
