Back on June 9th of this year and then again on the following day, GOS UK noted the troubling rise in influence that extreme religious groups were beginning to have over the education of British schoolchildren. We were alarmed to see that at least two members of a five-person review team belonged to, or were affiliated with, religious groups that protested against LGBTQI+ people and abortion and wanted to promote education centred around their ideas of God.

The UN Child Rights Committee (CRC) recently produced a report that was damning towards current educational standards and teaching for British schoolchildren. This highlighted the undue influence of religion in education, stating that the UK should "Repeal legal provisions for compulsory attendance in collective worship." and that the UK should establish "statutory guidance to ensure the right of all children, including children under 16 years of age, to withdraw from religious classes without parental consent".

Instead of taking the findings of this report onboard, the UK Government appears to be doubling down on its promotion of religious fundamentalism in education by listening to extreme right-wing Christian fundamentalists within its own Party.....

In the last two years, the UK Tory Government have passed separate legislation that; 1. Makes taking effective strike action almost impossible 2. Expanded police powers to let them stop or prevent any demonstration they want to 3. Passed the online safety bill which gives them the right to demand companies break encryption (amongst many other things) and have also started the process of; 1. Installing facial recognition systems across the entire country and (this was discovered yesterday) 2. Started drawing up legislation to vastly expand the definition of who can be labelled as an extremist to include anyone at all, described by Amnesty and others as 'criminalising dissent'.

The country is about 2 steps away from full blown fascism at this point.

HELLO FEDI! As you may have noticed, during the past month or so, racist harassment has been increasing. So, I have taken on a moderator, paying them from the Open Collective funds that some of you have generously donated to us! Which is great! However, the harassment continues and shows no signs of slowing down. This comes as no surprise to me because many server admins and committed users have been putting in real work to help make fedi safer for BIPOC. My sincere hope is that this powerful work creates more pathways for us to feel safer on fedi and bring more folks off of corporate hell social. Of course, work that truly threatens the status quo, in this case whiteness, will always bring overt and covert racists right to our door. White supremacists and their reactionary goons are always going to react with violence to people like us because our existence in this space threatens the stranglehold they have managed to get on the fediverse, driving BIPOC away from the platform in the process. So, today I am asking for your help in keeping my community safe. We need a second mod, and I want your help to get our coins up. I created a standalone recurring donation tier specifically to pay for us to have two mods. Musk threatens to sue researchers who documented the rise in hateful tweets

A nonprofit organization that researches links between social media, hate and extremism has been threatened with a lawsuit by X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. An attorney for the platform recently wrote to the Center for Countering Digital Hate accusing the group of trying to hurt the site's advertising. The center has published numerous research reports documenting an increase in hate speech on the platform since it was purchased last year by Elon Musk. The center says Musk is trying to silence his critics, despite his claims to support free speech.
