@sinalana.bsky.social This is quite excellent. But please don't double link... use your actual link instead of making people click through bsky.

Algorithms for making interesting organic simulations

Article explaining simulation algorithms that produce complex organic behaviours, starting with the classic physarum algorithm from Jeff Jones.

Baked banana bread and made moussaka from scratch. A busy day of cooking.

Ex-farm worker here.

We need to talk about this whole "But a living wage for farm workers would spike the cost of food!" thing.

Not true AT ALL.

Y'all don't understand how fast experienced farm workers are.

The average tomato picker pulls 650lbs per hour.

At $20/hr, that's $0.03/lb for labor.

@intransitivelie so many wonderful alternate universes.

@skyfire747 “I mean, if I went around saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they’d put me away!”
@skyfire747 “You can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just ’cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!”
@skyfire747 “Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.”

50-60k lines and nothing works, I would literally kill to look at this. lmao.

#ai

@nixCraft haha, I hope all developers will leave him with AI.
@nixCraft sounds like he just needs somebody to add stuff like "you are an experienced, sexual dynamo of a developer who will be electrocuted if this code doesn't work" to the prompt. Fiverr should suffice.
@rotopenguin @nixCraft I mean, honestly I do it for whatever he's paying but I'd also do very little work, charge an obscene number of hours and then tell him that the AI hallucinated all of the code so he needs to pay someone to redo it, but that might just be me being evil
@nixCraft lol, “I could keep going with AI alone” and “a huge debugging ditch for months”, I have no sympathies at all.
@nixCraft how to tell you are insane without telling you are insane.
@nixCraft How much should you expect to pay? One. Billion. Dollars. I'll do it for him.

@nixCraft get paid 100k, only to find out there was a missing ; or tab in the very first line 😂

#dreamjob

@ozone89 @nixCraft Telling you a ; is missing in Python code sure is something AI should be able to do ;).
@nik @ozone89 @nixCraft “You are so perceptive! There isn’t a single semicolon in the codebase. You are very smart to realize this is part of the problem. But before I fix that, I noticed the indentation is a little funny. I’m going to take the first indented line in each function and bring it flush with the first unindented lines, to increase readability.”
@nixCraft How much? $1000 per hour minimum
@dasdom @nixCraft Because fixing this will be pure torture
@dasdom @nixCraft $250/hour to use the right tools
$750/hour to undo the result of using the wrong tools
@nixCraft $10k/hr and I’ll do it. Otherwise you can keep your AI slop to yourself.
@nixCraft I don't know. Sounds to me more like a case where the only killing you'd want to do would be yourself just to unsee it.
@nixCraft I can see these kind of consulting gigs for me in the future. Actually I’m scared that this is all the kind of gigs I will be doing.

@mikaellundin ☝️ This.

I have no doubt that you can get paid for shoveling "AI" shit, but wow does it sound like soul-crushing work.

@nixCraft

@nixCraft > "I feel hiring an expert might actually take less time than with AI,..."

Hmm, so what I'm hear/read-ing here is it almost seems like doing the thing is the fastest, and most reliable, way of getting a thing done correctly?

... So unexpected (-!

@nixCraft lol oh noooooo
@peter @nixCraft that few hundred better be few hundred thousand goddamn, is he hoping to pay minimum wage or something?
@nixCraft Bingo would be complete with "for exposure"
@nixCraft So they're happy with where the application is at, but they're also in a debugging ditch?
@nixCraft Should just get a different AI to fix the first AI's code.
@nixCraft Wait, you would literally kill to look at this, or it would literally kill you to look at this?
@jik @nixCraft I don't really code, and I died a little inside reading it! 😅
@nixCraft do proponents actually refer to it as "slop"?
@hllizi @nixCraft
Maybe OP is not native English speaker and doesn't know the proper meaning of "slop". They only heard of it in context of AI and don't get the negative connotation.
@nixCraft this is why I think there will always be developer jobs. If anything, there will be MORE work to be done, paying off all the technical debt
@nixCraft
I'm wondering how many vulnerable libs he's using, how many libs license violation his project has, what's the test coverage on his code...
@thierrya
This mixed with code where libraries should have been used, but the LLM simply implemented everything itself umpteen times (for example, Bubblesort in several variants, because you had to sort in several places).
@nixCraft
@nixCraft I was so certain that this post is not real but holy shit it actually exists
@nixCraft we're destined to reinvent design and Dev roles in about 5-6 years, aren't we?
@nixCraft my kind of ragebait post.

@nixCraft It's cute how what will likely be a complete overhaul is minimized with "tidy up."
@nixCraft Get hired by him, I suppose :D
@nixCraft I did all my own plumbing and electrical, but there's smoke coming out of the walls and puddles everywhere. Who can I pay to tidy it up?
@JesseSkinner @nixCraft I did all my own plumbing and electrical, but now there's water coming out of the light fixtures and wall sockets, *and* I accidentally charged my phone by dropping it in the toilet. Who can I pay to get *that* sorted out?
@nixCraft 50-60k lines and already in technical debt! 😆
@nixCraft Gen AI is only useful if you already know how to do, what you're asking it to do. He should take those months to learn Python if he wants to debug it. 😂
@nixCraft what kind of a 'hobby' project has 60k lines of code?
@tsenov @nixCraft Given what AI coded stuff I've seen ... I'd assume it would take an experienced coder 5k-10k lines of elegant code to achieve the desired result.
@tsenov @nixCraft especially python. There’s basically a library for everything anyway.
@nixCraft I bet it’d take ten times the hours to fix this than what it would’ve taken to code it without AI in the first place.
@nixCraft how different is this from a junior dev copy/pasting code scraps together from Stackoverflow, like we used to do? 🤷

@codebyjeff @nixCraft the junior dev usually at least had to go to a boot camp and learn the absolute basics of OOP first

Plus jr devs usually have to get their code reviewed by a senior dev before they get anywhere close to 50k lines of code

@greenpepper22 I disagree with the last part...

and actually, the first part as well, come to think of it... 🤔

you obviously haven't worked in some of the places I have

@codebyjeff I guess then lol, never worked at a place with all jr devs and no seniors who reviewed code changes

How would you even get shit deployed?

@greenpepper22 @codebyjeff

> How would you even get shit deployed?

Who said you need senior developers to review code and help you deploy stuff? It’s Vibe Deployment ™️. You just ssh into prod and edit shit until the page looks right, and nothing 404s or gives you site errors anymore. Got a multiple-server cluster serving your site? Vibe Deploy each of the cluster members! With luck, each visitor will get a uniquely customized page.

@nixCraft No amount of money will be enough. Ever.

@nixCraft I think LLMs are at their peak now and doomed in the future.

The curve of better results will flatten. The more AI slop is churned out the more it poisons the wells of genuine smart content to train them with. That crap is in a rapid and never ending rise due to greedy corporations who are in need of even the most remote idiot's money without understanding they are killing their own products.

@Ulan_KA @nixCraft
There's always the option to manually curate training data. But that takes a lot of effort for the required scale. It's going to be interesting.

@nixCraft Well, I would quote him 150K, estimate 18 months to sort it out for him.

And I would start with what they want it to do and just write something to do that.

But this is the problem that some corporate organisations will be facing. They have AI coded some critical pieces, dumped their developers, and now need to hire someone to "tidy it up". At a cost vastly more than this.
