@ianbremmer Even if it is just saber-rattling, the threat against an ally alone is enough to destroy what remains of Europe's trust in the US and break the alliance. Seems newsworthy to me. The US better pray it doesn't end up needing Europe's help. Why would we want to put ourselves at risk to help a country that's openly threatening our sovereignty?

Agreed we shouldn't fall into the US-comparison trap in Germany -- it shouldn't whitewash the fact that there are real problems we can't ignore here.

However, we also shouldn't let the US' total distrust of police shape our perspective. Most Germans aren't afraid to call the police in an emergency and I think that's a good thing. It's not broken beyond repair here -- there's something worth fixing.

If you think this can’t happen, remember that of the 125,000 Japanese Americans who were interned during WWII for years without charge or trial, two-thirds were U.S. citizens. Including me.

@Bongolian @GottaLaff Same. I don't blame them at all, but isn't resigning also getting out of the way? Seems like heroic would be pretending to comply, while in actuality dragging your feet and gumming up their system with fake work.

@mosseri Selectively slipping political content from people who users don't follow into their feeds sure sounds like an attempt to manipulate and brainwash. I had already noticed more provocative right-wing content in my IG feed before I left recently. We all know it's only happening because of Trump's threats. It's just fascist propaganda for the modern era, tailor-made for you!

@heidilifeldman Yes, though from the perspective of an American living in Germany, I think she has this reversed. The AfD is certainly disturbing, but MAGA is more brazenly fascist. It's more frightening that the AfD would welcome a Musk endorsement or follow Trump as a role model.

@davidsirota I agree it's messaged up. But when the country voted to discard the rule of law, what do you expect him to do? The "normal process" now means do whatever is in your own interest.
