Over the last couple of days I've been trying out Focusmate - a web app for virtual coworking.

It matches you with a random person for a video call. At the start of the call, you say what you're working on, and then you work with your mic on mute, then at the end you say how you went. It has been so effective for helping my brain click into 'doing' mode.

If you struggle with procrastination, I would recommend giving it a try!

Focusmate feels like a magic trick for my brain - Larry Hudson

I wrote an article for the Information Access Group newsletter about the benefits of text-to-speech for readers and content authors.

This project was heavily inspired by Brainstory - a web app that guides you through a brainstorm by asking thought-provoking questions. If you have ideas that you struggle to turn into something real, definitely check it out.

I'm excited to share an open-source starter project using @astro and
@weaviate to explore the possibilities of generative search. This uses vector search to find semantically similar text in a database, then an LLM to generate text based on the results.

You can find out more in my blog post, including a video walkthrough:

Using Weaviate's generative search for brainstorming - Larry Hudson

How combining vector search with a large language model can be a powerful tool for brainstorming.

You may remember a while ago, we asked people to visit a little web app that grabbed their viewport sizes.

We had an idea in mind for a visualisation and article that today, we've just pushed live.

Before you settle on basing design decisions on a handful of strict breakpoints, make sure you consider the vast fragmentation of screen sizes and browser viewports.

A while ago, I wrote a little about what to include in a README for a project (https://matthiasott.com/notes/how-to-readme).

I now also created and published a README template I’ll use in upcoming projects. I hope it is useful! Any contributions or corrections are very welcome. 🤗

we have chosen to put most of our research into documents in PDF format.

PDFs are a huge pain to make accessible.

most scientists write their papers in Latex, overleaf, etc., which cannot produce accessible PDFs.

to make such PDFs accessible, one uses Adobe Acrobat, which is expensive and proprietary.

increasingly, we post our PDFs to arXiv, which ~forbids accessible PDFs b/c they can't be compiled from source.

~none of our science is accessible.

artifacts (and file formats) have politics.

Writing Logic in CSS

CSS is a highly specialized programming language focusing on style systems. Because of this unique use case and its declarative nature, it's sometimes hard to understand. Some folks even deny it's a programming language altogether. Let's prove them wrong by programming a smart, flexible style system.

I really wish more dev and design books were available as audiobooks.

I've bought so many books physical and digital that just sit on shelves unread because I can't "just read".

It's one of the few things that makes me hate being neurodivergent in a neurotypical world.

Like, I bought a number of A Book Apart books because I loved watching An Event Apart talks and heard great things about the books but I just can't read them. 🥲
