Wisdom from one of my scientific heros, Ottoline Leyser, at #EMBOat60 yesterday
Overly-narrow criteria for success fuel anxiety, inhibit creativity, and crush the joy out of science.
She points out that "Groundbreaking' is an analogy from the building trade.. the first step before carefully putting one brick on top of another.
If you only fund groundbreaking research then you might only end up with lots of small holes in the ground.
New PI diaries: Hiring people and building a lab
Read this latest 'diary entry' from Margot Smit, a new PI from the Center for Plant Molecular Biology (ZMBP), University of Tübingen:

I have been mystified why K represented Lysine for many years. Undergrad #biochemistry lecturer said “I don't know why, but I assume it is because of the end of the side chain looks like a K”. Well, turns out the answer is more simple.

I am a biochemist/structural biology researcher and professor at the MRC PPU, University of Dundee. My research group studies #ubiquitin biology protein and #signalling mechanisms. I think my posts will mainly be #science, ubiquitin and signalling related.
Thanks to a very helpful guide from @quantixed.org, I can move away from Twitter, start exploring Mastodon and be part of scientific discussions
