I just finished listening to a fascinating 6-part podcast on how common curricula that have been used to teach kids to read in the US (and other English-speaking countries) for decades now have actually been ineffective and maybe even harmful. Highly recommend listening to it, especially if you have kids or if you struggled with reading yourself growing up:

If anyone has recs for similar podcasts/essays/content on math education, let me know!

There's an idea about how children learn to read that's held sway in schools for more than a generation β even though it was proven wrong by cognitive scientists decades ago. Teaching methods based on this idea can make it harder for children to learn how to read. In this new podcast, host Emily Hanford investigates the influential authors who promote this idea and the company that sells their work. It's an expose of how educators came to believe in something that isn't true and are now reckoning with the consequences β children harmed, money wasted, an education system upended.
Auuuugh. Artists & Craftsman art supply in #CentralSquare #CambridgeMA will be closing mid-January 2023. Crap! What a loss for the #Boston and #SomervilleMA region.

OK, now I understand why I'm seeing all the #JohnMastodon jokes. π
A writer misread the Mastodon account that was banned from Twitter as "John Mastodon" instead of "Join Mastodon."
Mastodon stats update
Firehose landmark day!
Yesterday wasn't the biggest surge of new users. That was when there was a panic about the birdsite possibly collapsing on a November weekend.
But, if this is right, it was a critical landmark. Passed half a billion total posts. Close to 100m that day.
