Will you be posting about lectures, posters, or anything else at the 183rd ASA meeting in Nashville, TN, next week? Be sure to use #ASA183 so everyone can follow along!

@bookstodon @linguistics A question prompted by a post I saw: what are the best #ScienceFiction #scifi books where #languages play an important part?

There’s 1984, obviously. Even more obviously, The Languages of Pao by Jack Vance. The Imperial Radch series by Ann Leckie has some interesting language features in terms of gender identity, power and mutual intelligibility.

I’m sure there are loads more - this is ‘off the top of my head’ - what others would you recommend?

@paraic @bookstodon @linguistics Embassytown by China Mieville, and Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers are two good ones!
It really irks me to get addressed as Ms. by people who should know better. Literally google my name. It’s not hard. I have this laptop sticker for a *reason*.. sigh
Is this the best pie chart ever?

@PavelASamsonov I was thinking datasets that are geared toward user experience research problems and hci stuff. I have used statistics Canada in the past and it is fantastic (did my PhD at UBC)
@andresmh I’m mostly curious what’s out there! Not looking for anything specific, so this definitely counts
the two hardest problems in computer science are: (i) people, (ii) convincing computer scientists that people are the hardest problem, (vi) asynchronous programming, and (iii) off by one errors
I know all about #OpenAccess data in #linguistics (my PhD research area) but am wondering if there are good open access #hci / #ux datasets for hobbyists, students, or people who like to share #rstats analyses in a relevant subject but can’t talk about work publicly😬🙋🏻‍♀️

Do you think the ethical reputation of a company impacts whether graduating #computerscience students will take a job there?

This question was part of an exploratory study for (CU Boulder CS undergrad alum) Ella Sarder's honors thesis, now published as a poster at #CSCW2022. She interviewed 12 graduating students about factors they consider in the job search, how they define a “good” or “bad” company to work for, and how perceptions of ethics impact their choices.

Some brief findings:
