Clean energy, EVs & other interesting stuff. Co-host of Energy Matters on WGAU & VP at Escalent.

@burger_jaap lots of excitement about the technical potential about #V2G. But nobody has demonstrated a clear value prop for consumers (Octopus has come closest on the $ savings side, Ford on the home backup side).

And when consumer concern about #EV battery longevity already looms large, adding in another user of the battery absent that clear value prop is a pretty big hurdle…

@simonmahan and (psst - secret here): Americans don’t want to buy dorky hatchbacks.

Said with love as someone who *likes* dorky hatchbacks. But the first wave of #EV offerings were in the completely wrong vehicle segments to spur adoption.

@BPBartholomew may be time to introduce a “super off-peak” window in the TOU rates…
California's famous duck curve, updated for 2023. CAISO now routinely flirts with near-zero net loads on the sunniest spring days.
So now we have sanctions and boycotts against Russian coal, oil, and gas, but not against Russsia's nuclear industry, because we're too dependent on it?

#EV drivers have yet to cement #brand loyalty to any public charging networks. Even though - or perhaps especially because - most EV charging will happen at home, creating brand-loyal customers is a business imperative for charge point operators.

My Escalent colleague Ben Lundin and I share more about this & other recent findings from EVForward in our latest blog.

Escalent | Range Anxiety in the Rearview Mirror for Majority of EV Owners

New insights from Escalent illuminate consumer expectations for home and public charging and identify opportunities to position solutions for future EV owners

@chrisnelder agreed, but there are a couple of key hurdles:
1. The additional cost to enable Lightning V2H is steep. On the order of a home backup generator.
2. A lot of consumers are interested in resilience/backup power...but they also have concerns about impacts to EV battery health from V2x. Need to make it financially worth their while (see #1)

In the UK, the breakdown recovery services say that proportionately, they rescue more ICE drivers who have run out of fuel
@billheywood Thanks for the additional data point! Echoes the findings in our study from the US.
I don't want to minimize concerns people have about #EV range. But the reality is that "range anxiety" quickly goes away when you start driving one. And most EV owners haven't run out of charge. https://escalent.co/news/running-out-of-charge-not-so-fast-say-ev-owners/
Escalent | Running Out of Charge? Not So Fast, Say EV Owners

New findings from Escalent challenge prevailing perceptions around electric vehicle range and highlight the ease and reliability of EV ownership
