"It’s clear that copyediting as it’s typically practiced is a white supremacist project, that is, not only for the particular linguistic forms it favors and upholds, which belong to the cultures of whiteness and power, but for how it excludes or erases the voices and styles of those who don’t or won’t perform this culture." - Helen Betya Rubinstein via LitHub

Against Copyediting: Is It Time to Abolish the Other Department of Corrections?

I copyedited for five years in the offices of an esteemed book publisher, and during that time I became an expert in the most trivial things. Minor details occupied my workdays, which I spent in a …

in Norway, "up and not crying" is a not uncommon response to "how's it going" type questions, and I feel like that's a very reasonable standard to hold oneself to nowadays

I've just come across a lovely word in the book I'm currently reading which is

Confelicity - the pleasure you take from the happiness of others

Which I feel is a good descriptor for this site and the communities that are built up through this site

Good morning! A post just rolled across my fedi-timeline saying not to post about politics on Mastodon, so I'm here to remind you that:

1 "politics" refers to decision-making about how to live together in groups
2 choosing to not participate in political discussion is saying you support the status quo, and is a political stance
3 abstaining from politics because you feel safe from its impacts is a privilege and a choice to abandon your more vulnerable neighbours

Cricut cutting machines, ubiquitous in schools, libraries and makerspaces, can be used to make embossed or stenciled #TactileGraphics. A Braille embosser costs at least $1500 — Cricuts cost a fifth of that or less. Today I learned that I can handle the hardware and make great stencils: all that holds a Blind #maker back is a set of unlabeled controls in the software. Does anyone know somebody at #Cricut I could talk to about improving #accessibility? Boosters beloved on this one!
7 years ago, I started #artAdventCalendar with a tweet with the idea that things were somewhat dark and bleak and it would be nice to improve everyone’s Twitter timelines by posting and retweeting a bunch of art. Last we had 552 submitting participants sharing over 8,000 images; almost 12,000 people who shared almost 80,000 tweets. Since Twitter may not even be around by Dec 1, I'm going to see what we can do on here. Hope you join in #art #artist Full details > https://earthskyart.ca/artadventcalendar/
