The UK's Online Safety Act's push to protect kids online through content blocking and age checks sounds good—until you look deeper. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/08/blocking-access-harmful-content-will-not-protect-children-online-no-matter-how
Blocking Access to Harmful Content Will Not Protect Children Online, No Matter How Many Times UK Politicians Say So

The UK is having a moment. In late July, new rules took effect that require all online services available in the UK to assess whether they host content considered harmful to children, and if so, these services must introduce age checks to prevent children from accessing such content. Online...

American politicians are (rightly) condemning Trump’s military occupation of our cities as fascism.

By that logic, how are any of them arguing "Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East," given its military has violently occupied Palestine for more than 60 years?

The hypocrisy will be the death of our Republic.

The cooling towers of the Nottinghamshire coal power plant, which operated 1968-2019 and was responsible for approximately ~400 million tonnes (MtCO₂) going into the atmosphere (and which will remain there for 300 to 1,000 years) were demolished Aug 14th.

Damage done.

But satisfying to see this!

It's insane how we've monetized every part of living, even basic needs.

"I really earned my dinner tonight."
"I deserve some rest."

My brothers and sisters in Christ, you literally need those things to survive.

Sam Altman acknowledges there’s a bubble in AI. He compares it to the dotcom era where even though “The internet was a really big deal. People got overexcited.”

He calls it “insane” that startups which are “three people and an idea” are getting billions. He believes that someone is going to lose a “phenomenal amount of money” even as others make a phenomenal amount of money on AI.

"Palkkatyössä oleva omainen, joka joutuu jäämään pois työelämästä hoitaakseen vanhempaansa, menettää paitsi nykyiset tulonsa myös osan tulevasta eläkkeestään. Usein nämä hoivaajat ovat naisia. Jos hoivavastuu kasvaa, kasvaa myös sukupuolten välinen varallisuusero ja naisten köyhyys eläkeiässä.

Yritysten näkökulmasta tilanne on yhtä huolestuttava. Työvoimapula pahenee, kun osa työntekijöistä jää kotiin hoivaamaan läheistään."

Hoivavastuun siirtäminen omaisille olisi suuri taloudellinen kysymys.

"Across the German media landscape, such narratives contribute to stripping Palestinian journalists of credibility, and – in the worst case – handing Israel readymade justifications for targeting them.

Germany’s “never again” pledge should carry weight given its deeply genocidal history. Yet it rings hollow when the country’s dominant outlets launder or supply propaganda to legitimise mass killing in Gaza. This is not journalism in the service of truth – it is journalism in the service of violence. Breaking this cycle would require a serious reckoning with the editorial cultures and political loyalties that have enabled German journalism to be weaponised in this way.

The killing of journalists in Gaza makes one thing painfully clear: Israel does not want a record to be left. When the history of this genocide is written, there will be chapters on the media’s role. Germany’s section will be uncomfortably large. No one should claim they didn’t see it happening."

@anuko @juuhaa @magdalenahai @sinihelminen @katrikauppinen Toi hesarin teksti on ihan posketonta roskaa.

Fellow language learners, if you have ditched Duolingo because they wedged in AI slop (because you care about how they treat their workers and/or the accuracy of the lessons and/or AI impact on the planet, etc.), what are you using for language study now and for which languages?

@TENET_CDN @josh Where then?
@JohnDal @josh Anywhere on the globe where fascism is not afoot and flourishing, that it where. America is fertile ground for fascism and is aided and abetted by oligarch -obviously.
@TENET_CDN @josh Sorry, You inplied that the photo was not in the USA, which sounded like you had other info on it. No worries, I agree with the sentiments.

dann Hut ab!
Und ein herzliches Dankeschön an ihn 🏆

@josh

He knows fascism when he sees it - he’s been there before! Hope I am so good if I get to be 102 years young like him! 🙂

@josh I find this very moving, because it's very humbling for those of us (MOST of us) who didn't go through the same. This is what real heroism looks like.
