I‘m looking forward to applying what I‘ve learnt about FlexBox to our project.

Here’s the lightning sketch of Paul’s Treatise Against Efficiency that I’ve never written:

1. Efficiency is asymptotically inefficient: as costs approach zero, the cost of further reducing them approaches infinity.
2. Efficiency prioritizes the measurable over the difficult-to-measure.
3. Efficiency prioritizes what those in power see (or imagine) over on-the-ground reality.
4. Following from 2 and 3, efficiency reduces the amount and quality of information flowing into a human system.
5. Efficiency foments institutional inflexibility.
6. By removing slack, efficiency causes small failures to cascade more readily and increases the risk of catastrophic failure.
7. Following rom 4, 5, and 6, efficiency trades small costs for massive risks: from failures, from missed opportunities, and from inability to adjust.
8. Efficiency, when pushed, strangles the emergent phenomena that in the long term create all new things of value.
9. Thus, although it can be a by-product of evolution, efficiency as a goal in itself strangles evolution.
10. Efficiency as a goal strangles joy.

Two standard URIs we need in [current year]:

1. Music. I should be able to share a platform agnostic link to a song that your music service can match and open correctly

2. Maps. This one should be like especially straightforward. Why can’t I send you a link from Apple Maps that opens in Google Maps or Open Street Map or whatever.

Let’s go standards body people. I know y’all are on Fedi

Edit: hey maybe check replies before replying. A ton of people have already mentioned geo:// 🙂

Turns out I was channeling Jerry Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy: "In any bureaucracy, the people devoted to the benefit of the bureaucracy itself always get in control and those dedicated to the goals that the bureaucracy is supposed to accomplish have less and less influence, and sometimes are eliminated entirely". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Pournelle#Pournelle's_iron_law_of_bureaucracy

People make a lot of claims about what is and isn't happening for software teams but ask so little about how software teams are being studied. Are we honestly supposed to think that survey science for behavioral questions about software teams doesn't need to be anything other than clustering a scant handful of weird self-reported items into ordered groups and then saying that's a meaningful benchmark

Because I'll give you a hint, that's also exactly how snake oil personality tests are created

The European Vulnerability Database (EUVD) is now fully operational, offering a streamlined platform to monitor critical and actively exploited security flaws amid the US struggles with budget cuts, delayed disclosures, and confusion around the future of its own tracking systems https://euvd.enisa.europa.eu/

to me, it seems like it would have been news that Google stopped 30 million #ads for "misinformation" in 2023 but zero in 2024 https://blog.zgp.org/google-ads-shitshow-report-2024/ (I guess misinformation has friends in high places now, and there was enough other Google news last week)

Even the Financial Times admits that Donald Trump is building a police state.

This should give everyone a new perspective on the movement to abolish the police, which was so controversial a few years ago. Despite tremendous outcry against racist police killings, the Biden administration doubled down on promoting the legitimacy of police and channeled considerable quantity of resources towards them, all of which they will now use to impose Trump's agenda on us.

The movement to abolish the police was our best hope of countering the forces via which autocrats like Trump will impose fascism.

It still is.

"The only possible way out of this mess is to develop the ability to wield power on our own terms, horizontally and autonomously, stripping the police of legitimacy and shattering the illusion that they are invincible. This has been the common thread between practically all the significant movements of the past several years."

We said that in 2014.
