"Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones.
But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal.
A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts, Mead said."
We are at our best when we serve others. Be civilized.

I keep hearing #journalists and pundits talking about the #Putin / #Prigozhin #coup and saying things like "Who could have seen this coming?"

May I suggest "Anyone over 50 who has spent any time following #Russian #politics at all" could safely have gambled the family farm on this coming?

My #Russia Coup folder has three subfolders, and that's just 1991, 1993 and 2023. And I still think there should be one for 1999.

Hire older journalists, you silly newspapers and TV shows.

This reflects my feelings.
“Titan and Adriana are two vessels recently lost at sea, four days and 4,000 miles apart. The five men who lost their lives on the Titan have been getting wall-to-wall coverage in the media worldwide. Meanwhile, the estimated 700 who died when the Adriana sank off the coast of Greece, mostly women and children, have been essentially forgotten.”

A Titanic Disparity in How the World Responds to Maritime Disasters

By Amy Goodman & Denis Moynihan All travelers, whether migrants or millionaires, deserve rescue. The global response to the Titan’s disappearance should be the model for how we respond to migrant vessels in distress.

Is there anyone who uses #Substack that can help me with this issue? I'm having it on both the writer profile [shown] and the personal account side [I uploaded a image to see what it looked like and I can seem to delete or change it]

I remember listening to the radio with my daughters when we heard news of a presidential candidate,Trump, himself, boasting about grabbing women in their personal area. I remember saying, "well he's out". I was very wrong. I also remember their responses, at breakfast, when they learned he was declared the winner. I had to hide my anger, be the mature mom, dont worry, its all going okay, he'll have a lot of checks and balances. Today we need justice because in 2016 we expected prevention.
