High-throughput genetic manipulation of multi-cellular organisms using a machine-vision guided embryonic microinjection robot - PubMed

Microinjection is a technique used for transgenesis, mutagenesis, cell labeling, cryopreservation, and in vitro fertilization in multiple single and multicellular organisms. Microinjection requires specialized skills and involves rate limiting and labor-intensive preparatory steps. Here we construct …

Americans wondering how on earth all the Taylor Swift fans got to last week’s concert at the Melbourne Cricket Ground when there’s no sea of car parking next to the stadium:

Article’s up in its properly formatted form! Open access too. Pleased this work is out there for people to read and hoping it can spark more research into this neat gene family.

Phylogenomics of the Ecdysteroid Kinase-like (EcKL) Gene Family in Insects Highlights Roles in Both Steroid Hormone Metabolism and Detoxification

Abstract. The evolutionary dynamics of large gene families can offer important insights into the functions of their individual members. While the ecdysteroid ki

Preprint is here: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.01.22.576657v1 Could Wall misexpression be affecting the regulation of Pri peptides? Perhaps a non-20E ecdysteroid is involved? Would explain defects in trachea too, development of which is also controlled by Pri. I speculate a little about this in the preprint but paper in the previous post makes this link even more tantalisingly possible…

Curiously, a lot of similarities between the cuticle sclerotisation phenotypes seen here and those in my recent preprint on ecdysteroid kinase candidates! https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38335295/
Pri peptides temporally coordinate transcriptional programs during epidermal differentiation - PubMed

To achieve a highly differentiated state, cells undergo multiple transcriptional processes whose coordination and timing are not well understood. In Drosophila embryonic epidermal cells, polished-rice (Pri) smORF peptides act as temporal mediators of ecdysone to activate a transcriptional pro …

Thrilled to have started a new position at Agriculture Victoria! I’ll be working on developing metabarcoding pipelines and databases for biosecurity, which will be a fun challenge. Mixing all my interests in bioinformatics, insects and fungi. Keen for my work to have some real-world impact too—and the building ain’t half bad either.
