Voyager 1 and 2 were designed for a 5 year mission. ("Its five year mission"? Hmm.) But both probes have been kept operational since 1977, almost half a century -- an order of magnitude longer than planned. Meanwhile, our consumer electronics products are lucky to make it operationally through a 90 day warranty.

For a half century now, Republicans a) pretend to care about deficits when Dems are in power, as a pretext to cut spending, & b) massively grow deficits when they are in power, via tax cuts for the rich. The mainstream political press has not just allowed this deception, they've actively colluded.

Very early #OnThisDay, 30 April 1944, New Zealander Nancy Wake parachutes into occupied France to be a courier for the Special Operations Executive. The British SOE supported French Resistance to Nazi occupation.

Nick-named 'the white mouse' by the Gestapo, she is never captured. She died in 2011.

@FediThing a lot of SOE agents were dropped in the spring of 44 with the goal of, once D Day started, sabotaging German attempts to send reinforcements towards Normandy.

@CarveHerName I have had a copy of Nancy Wake's book since childhood and I read it every few years.
It's remarkable what she got up to. Some of the stories occasionally seem absurd, surely exaggerated, such as when she claims to have taken photos of escapees posed in front of Italian troops. But the photo appears in the book. A remarkable woman.
