#DYK that an #ElectricArcFurnace can use up to 100% scrap steel as its raw material? 🏗♻ Traditional #steelmaking using a blast furnace emits around 2.32 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of steel produced. Switching to an electric arc furnace could reduce that number to 0.67 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of steel.

A great article by Dr Rebecca Waldram summarises what you need to know about electric arc furnaces and why the UK needs to #decarbonise its steel industry.

Electric arc furnaces: the technology poised to make British steelmaking more sustainable

Electric arc furnaces can use up to 100% scrap steel as its raw material, resulting in a significant reduction in emissions.

At this early stage of development, it is vital that #Perovskite #SolarCells are designed for a #CircularEconomy to ensure #sustainability.

This was emphasised in a recent paper in the Royal Society of Chemistry Energy and Environmental Science journal.

☀Learning from Dr Carys Worsley how printed carbon #perovskite #SolarCells are made at our PMRC (Pilot Manufacturing Resource Centre) cleanroom.

👕The cells are printed using the same technology used for #screenprinting t-shirts, then their efficiency is tested in a solar simulator.

There's some information here if you'd like to learn more about our printed #PV: https://specific-ikc.uk/printed-photovoltaics/

Printed Photovoltaics

We develop solar technologies that allow high-efficiency thin-film printed photovoltaics to be created at scale using earth-abundant, low-cost materials.

Specific

Cotech is a South Wales-based company specialising in lighting and LED filters. Last year, we supported Cotech with the installation of a #solar PV system. ☀

After 1 year of operation, the #PV has saved Cotech £25k, meaning the predicted payback period is just 4 years.

You can find out more about our #RenewableEnergy project with Cotech in this case study: https://specific-ikc.uk/cotech-sensitising/

Renewable Energy Impact Assessment at an Industrial Estate (Cotech Sensitising Ltd)

To support Cotech's ambitions to reduce their carbon footprint and energy costs, SPECIFIC conducted a detailed renewable energy impact assessment using site energy data and quotations for on-site solar PV and battery installation provided by Cotech.
