For those who missed it, the latest series of the podcast Archive Fever is out now. I was delighted to be the guest for episode 5 talking about archives and the temple of history. Catch up here: https://www.archivefeverpod.com/ep5-the-temple-of-history

The article that prompted our discussion, 'The temple of history: historians and the sacralisation of archival work' is also available online here: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14490854.2021.1988650

EP5: The Temple of History — ARCHIVE FEVER

ARCHIVE FEVER
Hello! 🤗 I'm a historian of photography based in Leicester, UK, working on the history and ethics of medical photography, focusing on nineteenth century France.
My first book Picturing the Western Front examined how photographic practices shaped experiences during the First World War
I post mostly about #photohist #histmed #ethics but who knows how we're going to use this site!

Meet Eugen Rotchko (@Gargron), founder of @Mastodon, who just got a profile in TIME magazine. I encourage you to really read the entire excellent interview, bc not only will you learn more about the ethos behind Mastodon, but you can also hear what it’s like for an intelligent human being to talk about social media.

“Thousands Have Joined Mastodon Since Twitter Changed Hands. Its Founder Has a Vision for Democratizing Social Media.”

Thousands Have Joined Mastodon Since Twitter Changed Hands. Its Founder Has a Vision for Democratizing Social Media

Thousands of users have joined Mastodon since Elon Musk took control of Twitter. Mastodon's founder Eugen Rochko says it's been a vindication

#introduction time! I'm an #aviation #historian – and now #histodon! – in Australia, though I mostly study Britain. I'm less interested in aircraft themselves than in how they've made people think and feel ("airmindedness").

I've written on the knock-out blow from the air, the Hendon air display, the international air police force, etc; I'm currently writing an emotional history of the German air raids on Britain during #WW1.

Ask me about phantom #airships!

I blog at https://airminded.org

A tip someone passed along earlier that is worth repeating. Discoverability on mastodon is improved when you boost posts rather than just favoriting them. Unlike the   bird site, mastodon does not show in my feed the things you favorite. So boost the stuff you like! Tags also help discoverability! #twittermigration #tips

I forgot about this photo until I was looking for a fresh banner image to put up here. This was a mid-winter sunset over kunanyi/Mt Wellington, or – as Hobartians know it – simply 'The Mountain'.

And this really wasn't even anything special, just a run-of-the-mill evening.

Day 2 on #histodons & still have no idea what’s going on

So here’s a picture of two 18th-century women balancing angry animals on their massive bums 🤷‍♀️ Don't say I don't treat you

As #mastodon grew this week I noticed more photos being posted without a description of the photo.

Please include it! Part of the reason I joined is because this placed seemed more accessible.

What I'm trying to say is I want to boost your cat photos, but I can't in good conscience do so unless those photos are accessible.

Along with researching colonial landscapes, I also teach #familyhistory in a fully online program offered by the University of Tasmania. At the moment, I'm in the final couple of weeks of running a training course for #library, #archive and information professionals that focuses on how to help family historians who visit their institutions.

I'm looking for all my #genealogy people among the #histodons, and always keen to talk online pedagogy (especially for students with lower digital literacy, as many of ours have).

Hello #histodons 👋
