The U.S.-Israel war on Iran is now in its fourth week, and the economic reverberations continue to be felt all over the world.
@ludicity For the record, I work at a software company that employs ~10k developers.
Before LLMs, I'd encounter such engineers a couple of times a month, but I interact with a lot of engineers, specifically the ones that need help or are new at the company or industry at large, so it's a selected sample. Even the most inexperienced ones are willing and able to learn with some guidance.
After LLMs, there's been a significant uptick, and these new ones are grossly incompetent, incurious, impatient, and behave like addicts if their supply of tokens is at all interrupted. If they run out of prompt credits, its an emergency because they claim they can't do any work at all. They can't even explain the architecture of what they are making anymore, and can't even file tickets or send emails without an LLM writing it for them, and they certainly lack in any kind of reading comprehension.
It's bleak and depressing, and makes me want to quit the industry altogether.

Though I've had a burning fire to learn, I can't and won't claim to be self-taught in electronics and computers, as I had many good mentors. (I've also enjoyed teaching, especially those moments when a student pushes through and grasps something new!)

I've been noticing a problem with recent papers I have been given to review - they are SLOPPY and incomplete. These papers are from labs that I respect tremendously who normally do great work. But they are submitting work that wouldn't pass an undergraduate lab class. Analyses are incomplete. Conclusions are forced. Results are thrown together without structure. I've been reviewing papers for more than 30 years and I've never seen anything like this. Suddenly I'm seeing a lot of these.
Has anyone else been seeing this?
(All these papers were bioRxiv'd first and are now under journal-level peer-review.)
PS. I don't think these are AI. They are from labs that I wouldn't think would use AI, certainly not to write papers. The papers also don't read like AI. It looks more like they are submitting papers 6 months too early, before they really understand their data.
Why US centrists are bad.
There are policies that the left and the right both agree on. But those aren't the centrist policies.
There are policies that the left loves and the right hates, because the left needs them to survive, and policies that the right loves and the left hates, because cruelty.
Centrists are politicians that siphon away the political power of those that vote to survive, and use that power to enact the cruel policies desired by the right.
As in: Get elected by Black people... then make police brutality and mass incarceration *worse*.🤡

Maybe a politician really does think that the problem with the US is that we are *not cruel enough* to Black people. That there should be *more* Black people in jail, and *more* cops, and *fewer* libraries, and *worse* schools.🤷🏿♂️
So let them get elected by the people on the right that believe that.
