And a fantastic followup to my initial request!

I commented on the original Thingiverse posting and the creator responded and made a remix!

Fingers crossed it prints well!!!

ATX PCI Expansion Slot Low Profile Guard Keystone Adapter by Yaodin

Low Profile remix of ATX PCIe Expansion Slot guard/cover that supports 2 keystone passthroughs. Useful when you want to store additional hardware in a case and pass through connectivity. Printing Recommended Print in two pieces and use CA glue to join. Print guardlp.3mf and tablp.3mf Alternative To print single piece use the keystone_atx_guard_lp.3mf file

The whole idea with this server is for it to be as self-contained as possible that it can just sit there and do what it needs to do without worrying about something getting accidently unplugged (or making that accidental unplug easier to deal with).

Keeping the router internal means no separate device to put next to the server (and to have to keep clean of dust).

The Keystone PCI slot cover mentioned earlier means an even cleaner look!

The only bit of (significant) bodge is the internal mounting of the #Mikrotik router.

This particular routerboard is just to test placement (the actual router just arrived an hour or so ago) so the attachment method is..not very good.

I have found some 3d printable SSD mounts for that space in the server that I will try to get printed and then just tap my own router mounting holes.

The router gets power from the server's PSU via a 12v Molex-to-barrel power connector and via PoE injector.

Since I said the server is coming together nicely, I figure I probably should drop some receipts on the progress!

The SSD mount fits super snug!

The PSU in the #MicroServerGen8 has a single 4 pin Mini-Molex Berg connector (for floppy drives).

HPE uses a 4pin Berg-to-Slimline SATA adapter to power the laptop-style CD drive (more accurately known as a "6p + 7p 13 pin Slimline SATA" connector, aka "ODD SATA").

I used a Slimline SATA > Full SATA adapter for the SSD

HP Proliant MicroServer Gen8 ODD to 2.5" SSD/HDD adapter remix by mindogas

Added screw holes to mount HDD or SSD firmly. [2021-05-17 EDIT] Added remix (AA8_ssd 95.stl) for 9.5mm HDD/SSD. Original file (AA8_ssd.stl) is for drives up to 7mm.

So my "Build a self contained server for remote site" project is nearing completion.

It's looking very good, so I am higher!

So I found a PCI Slot bracket keystone mount (for Ethernet jacks)!

But it's a full-height bracket and I have a half height/low profile slot.

So, with zero CAD experience and no printer to test with, do we think I can do it??

😂

So, does anyone have a few mins to remove one of the ports and shorten it?

Ok, I need some opinions: I am going to be putting an HPE MicroServer Gen8 at a remote site. My plan is to make this as self-contained and resilient as possible; In addition to mounting a router inside the server case, a friend 3D printed a dust filter holder for the front.

But what filter medium should I use?

It has only one fan, so I need to keep static pressure to a minimum.

Pending thermal tests I intend on sealing up the gaps in the back (near the PCIe slots)

Don't worry though, I stuck with the RAID-z2. 🤣
I am intending to put this system pretty far from me so I am doing my best to ensure I can manage it completely remotely.
The people there will be able to replace drives (I replaced the drive caddy's Torx screws with Phillips to make that easier) but I don't want to have to rely on any other help.

Setting up an HPE MicroServer Gen8 for offsite backup use (meaning I will physically locate this box offsite and I will replicate to it from my prod storage).

I always use RAID 6/RAID-z2 for my storage systems, so the 4x 14TB Seagate Exos X16 drives would leave me with 25 TB.

I don't usually use such large capacity drives, so the jump to 38 TB raw capacity that comes with RAID-z is a bit more tempting than usual. 😬

And it's a backup appliance too... 😅

Heads up fellow #MastoAdmin, While the @Mastodon mods have a handle on the situation ( https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/110310808786260795 ), your local instance won't immediately refresh the account suspension from the origin.

You can mass-suspend accounts from the moderator console, which will remove any un-reported posts from your user's view.

In this situation, the search query is pretty easy (Domain: "mastodon.social"; Display Name: "Mastodon"), just DON'T select all!! Check each page manually for false positives!
