I’m a retired lisp hacker, enjoying {swing, ballroom, country} dancing, learning the clarinet, playing dominion, learning Spanish. and occasionally still crack open Clozure Common Lisp when I need to make me some tools.
It wasn’t easy, but I’ve penned an overview of the war in Ukraine to mark this one year anniversary. I hope you’ll read to help celebrate the courage of the Ukrainian people while heeding their plea that we remain in solidarity with them. The War in Ukraine: A Look Back and Ahead on This Somber Anniversary

It was Ukraine’s “longest day,” said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. But the nation’s valiant struggle against a larger, murderous enemy, and its considerable successes in repelling Russian aggression, proved that “every tomorrow is worth fighting for.”

I've had the idea for a weird kind of Twitter client for years. With Mastodon being all open, I've decided to do the experiment:

What if your Timeline looked like iMessage. A normal timeline confuses me to no end because everything is out of context.

My experiment, Ebou, is a Mastodon client that looks like iMessage. Conversations are grouped by friends and sorted by recent postings.

It is super basic right now, but this already feels much more natural to me 😀

Journalists were some of my most valuable follows back on Twitter, but I'd not yet found many of them on Mastodon.

Turns out I wasn't looking in the right places. @tchambers has a list of more than 1000 of them + their fediverse handles: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13No4yxY-oFrN8PigC2jBWXreFCHWwVRTftwP6HcREtA/htmlview #news #journalists

hi! my name's David, and I like the algorithms. They throw random stuff at me and I get a sample from the firehose of what's going on. It's good.

The catch with Twitter and Facebook is they're using them against you. I'd like some random interesting stuff algorithms here.

why yes 2020 bludgeoned home to me the precise nature of long untreated ADHD.

(no, treatment as an adult is ~impossible to get in the UK without a year or two of jumping through hoops, precisely because the medically indicated treatment is amphetamines.)

I realise the Mastodon developer considers this a wrong thing to want. He is incorrect, it's a fine thing to want. The problem is the abuse of data, not the interest algorithm.

Anyway. Are there any fun algorithmic timeline bolt-ons for Mastodon?

(Responses to this that start "just" are likely not understanding what I'm saying here.)

I run a small volunteering initiative, together with a colleague from Poland, that offers free online language lessons to Ukrainians 🇺🇦

If you'd like to teach English, for only one hour every TWO weeks, please consider applying!

If you speak Ukrainian or Russian to any degree, and/or if you have teaching experience - you'll be given priority❗

Boosts are appreciated 🙏🏻

Everyone is focused on who the Club Q killer in Colorado Springs is and what his motive was. Those aren’t the questions we should be asking. I explain why in today’s piece on stochastic terrorism and what should be doing about it.

The Motive Behind the Massacre Isn’t the Right Question To Ask

It didn’t take long after the horrific shootings at Club Q in Colorado Springs before the media, politicians and the public focused on the motive of the killer. Was it a hate crime, or just some random attack? Papers were at pains to say that the club and the community deemed it a hate crime, even while withholding judgment and waiting for authorities to issue more information on the background of the murderer. Fox News, true to form, ran a

@skrishna yes, the tone is a lot more paternalistic here even in random conversations, and especially about the platform itself.

UPDATE: no need for further boosting. Thank you everyone!

My boss, Matt Mullenweg, the boss of Automattic, owner of Tumblr, is looking for ex-Twitter employees for Tumblr, saying,

"we're putting on a fast track to see how they can help super-charge Tumblr. We can't absorb thousands of people, but I'd be open to hiring entire teams if they already work great together."

We have decided to create an account at Mastodon. We need time to learn how this platform works but also how to synchronize our work here with the Twitter account.

Thank you all for joining us here. No matter where we are, the mission stays the same. We are in social media to commemorate the victims of Auschwitz and educate the world about the tragic story of the camp.

I can now read Mastodon conversations as proper threads on the command-line. Just as nature intended!

Some pretty simple #Python code which uses the #MastodonAPI.
