Great thoughtful blog post from @jeroenbosman and @Jeroenson on @upstream: The resilience of open science in times of crisis.

https://doi.org/10.54900/pqrcx-8d019

They abstract different types of threats and different aspects of resilience - linking both to the current political situation.

Open science is under threat, but can itself also provide opportunities for resilience.

The resilience of open science in times of crisis

The increasingly hostile attitude of the new U.S. government towards science and academia leaves many of us deeply concerned— if not outright alarmed. In an effort to better understand the unfolding situation and navigate its potential impacts, we provide an overview of five types of threats, each supported by

First potatoes.

Public health, clean water, Pell Grants, school lunches. These things didn’t come from corporations or billionaires. They came from movements. From us.

Without fail, every one of @b0rk's zines has hit me with a new or better understanding of how things work. This one's no exception.

Mastodon
SunOS 4.0.3 desktop from 1989. I will take this over modern stuff any day. Sun was rock solid with Unix and hardware stuff until Oracle decided to ruin that iconic brand.
First, I took a paintbrush with me to the doctor's office so that the cast could be molded around my hand holding the brush. That way I could still paint large areas with that hand. Then I relearned how to paint with my left hand. Although I am not ambidextrous, I had done some left-handed artwork before and I managed. 2/5

THANATOS (1983)
Acrylic - 24" x 36"

Just before beginning this painting I broke my right hand—my painting hand!—and I found myself forced to function with my fingers, wrist, and arm immobilized in a cast. Determined not to let the injury stop me from painting, I employed several tricks to circumvent my temporary infirmity. 1/5

Instagram collects scary amounts of your data 🫣 Mastodon on the other hand - None! ✅

What do we learn? There are great services available that do not abuse your data.

@Tutanota That is one of the reasons, why I consider #Facebook #Instagram and #Whatsapp as malicious applications and their apps as malware (categories #spyware and #adware).
@Tutanota You should have used pixelfed because that's the actual alternative, not Mastodon
@TwodpadsDown Thanks for the idea, we will next time ;)
@Gargron @Tutanota I think @TwodpadsDown was referring to the actual comparison between Pixelfed & Instagram.
@Gargron probably because Pixelfed is centered around image sharing. But sure, Mastodon can do it too. However I think many people nowadays use Instagram because of the stories that their friends and influencers posts and because of reels that basically make users addicted.
@Tutanota The comparison to @pixelfed seems more on point.
@collectifission @Tutanota @pixelfed I would say the same, as Mastodon is more microblogging with Pixelfed more a replacement for Instagram.
@Tutanota Here is a list of what those labels actually mean. https://developer.apple.com/app-store/app-privacy-details/#data-type
Especially "Sensitive Info" is rather... sensitive.

@Tutanota

Hi, Take a good look at the new Terms of Service for the mastodon.social network — nothing in this network truly belongs to you anymore. The main point:

If it’s important to you to retain the right to revoke permissions for your content after deletion, the current version of Mastodon’s Terms (even though not yet enforced) does not protect that right. Moreover, the mandatory arbitration clause significantly limits your legal options in the event of a dispute.

@xenomorph @Tutanota you know you can just, not use mastodon[.]social
The default app sets you up for an account there (and i fell for that) but you can use any other server.
@Tutanota the fuck‽ That's awful!
Instagram literally ticked every box in the data sharing section

@Tutanota Let's say an app tracked all of those things and opt-in allowed you to post them to a P2P system for storage and retrieval by you only (or published if you like) and associated with a profile that exists in that same P2P network (all this is possible and exists).

Is that app "collecting" data in the sense applicable here?

Clearly it's way different to the user, but what would the app have to say here?

@Tutanota Still I'll prefer Instagram.

Because most of the people of my country didn't even know what is Mastodon 😅

I found hardly 3 to 4 accounts here on #Mastodon which belongs to #Pakistan and still active here.
