The U.K. accelerates toward police state status, by requiring the equivalent of a license to read and speak online. Worse, it drastically undermines your personal security.

The US is moving this way, too. Wake up, people, because it's almost too late.

No ID Checks for Web Access

Take action! What’s the problem? The Government has proposed amendments to the Children Wellbeing and Schools Bill, which would give Ministers the power to restrict access to "internet services". This is supposed to give the Government the power to ban under 16s from social media but “internet services" is a very broad definition, which means any online platform can be included. The wording of the amendment means they could do this without even having to prove that these sites are harmful for children.

These two headlines are five days apart, today Hegseth is ducking questions about who is responsible for the bombing of a school and the deaths of 180 children and their teachers, and I'd like to wish everyone at Anthropic a very happy complicity in war crimes.

🚨 ID checks to get online could become the new norm 🚨

A new amendment would give the UK government sweeping powers to block access to lawful information and communications.

That's unless we submit our identification to a bounty of providers.

Tell your MP to stop this broad and repressive law ⬇️

Hey! Good news everyone! The #SupremeCourt, by declining to overrule the #Copyright Office, has declared that #AI art cannot be copyrighted.

It's bigger than just Thaler's case though. (links below) What this means is that NO AI created work can be copyrighted. Not code, not verbiage, not art, not anything.

Only human created works are eligible for copyright, so sayeth the High Court.

Cory (@pluralistic) does a fantastic job of explaining the details and rounding up links. As he always does. Where he finds the hours in the day, I will never know. ;)

Archive link to #ArtNet because something on the page was blowing up my browser, but they have more details on the case itself, and the "art" in question which just saved real artists: https://archive.md/bsyrQ

I can’t stop thinking about Nurul Shah Alam, the disabled refugee who died after Border Patrol left him outside in the cold with no way to contact friends or family.

It took five days for him to die.

He was blind and didn’t speak English.

They took the pole he was using as a cane.

This man survived an actual genocide only to be killed by the incompetence and cruelty of the Trump regime.

Five days of wandering around lost, sick and disoriented.

It was all preventable.

They could have taken him home.

They could have called his family.

They could have refused to leave him for dead.

Say his name. Don’t ever forget what they did.

One thing we know about the mass tech layoffs attributed to "AI" is that they follow a trend of mass tech layoffs that firms were formerly forced to admit were the result of their businesses contracting sharply after the lockdowns ended, when users didn't need nearly so many cloud services. By blaming the continuing layoffs on "AI," companies whose business continues to contract can tell investors that they are on the bleeding edge, not the contracting tail.

The UK has announced plans to fast-track legislation requiring “age verification for VPN use”. The correct term, however, is not age verification but identity verification.

A law like this would require everyone to identify themselves in order to use a VPN. This would pose a risk to whistleblowers, violate human rights, and represent yet another step toward an authoritarian society.

Hungary has blocked the EU from imposing sanctions on violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank, while also halting a 20th sanctions package against Russia and a major loan to Ukraine. In response, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas criticized the EU's requirement for unanimous agreement, arguing that allowing a single member state to overrule the other 26 creates a "tyranny of the single vote" that severely hinders the bloc's foreign policy and human rights efforts.

Hungary, represented by Minister Péter Szijjártó, also blocked the 20th package of sanctions against Russia and withdrew its approval for the maxi-loan to Ukraine agreed by leaders in December.

My favourite piece of internet today is the theory that Jesus was actually a type of yeast.

Turns water into wine
Floats on water
Makes bread for 5000 people
Put in a cave for 3 days and lo - he has risen!
Jesus was a sourdough starter.

Also this would imply: We should be calling him 'Mother' not 'Father'
