"ASTM, a private organization that coordinated the development of some of those codes, insists that it retains copyright in them even after they have been adopted into law, and therefore has the right to control how the public accesses and shares them. Fortunately, neither the Constitution nor the Copyright Act support that theory."

Another Court Rules Copyright Can’t Stop People From Reading and Speaking the Law

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit upheld a lower court’s ruling that it is fair use to copy and disseminate building codes that have been incorporated into federal and state law, even though those codes are developed by private parties who claim copyright in them. The court followed the suggestions EFF and others presented in an amicus brief, and joined a growing list of courts that have placed public access to the law over private copyright holders’ desire for control.

Philz Coffee continues to be more and more shitty after the new CEO took over in 2023. First they sent employees home for wearing “Free Palestine” shirts, then they sold the company to a private equity firm, fucking over employees who bought “stock” in the company that ended up worthless, and now they’re taking Pride flags down from stores.

geez. Senators want to lock up the law (again).

@carlmalamud spent years making sure the law (and standards included in the law) were publicly accessible for free. Even getting the Supreme Court to declare it so.

yeah, but...

boo.

Congress Wants To Put The Law Behind A Paywall. Again.

Every relevant court that has looked at this question — including the Supreme Court — has agreed: no one can own the law. When private standards get incorporated into binding legal requirements, th…

I don't own a car. I take public transit everywhere, and I do think personal vehicle use has real environmental costs. But I don't think driving is inherently unethical.

I live in Seoul, and the city makes transit easy for me. That's not a virtue. It's a condition I happen to benefit from. Some people live where transit barely exists, or where it doesn't get them to work, school, or care. In those places, driving is not optional.

The same is true of flying. In parts of Europe you can cross borders by train. In island nations, or in places with weak land connections, flying may be the only realistic option. “Just fly less” means very different things in those places.

A lot of what gets called my ethical choices comes from the conditions I live in. That makes me wary of turning structural failures into personal morality. If the alternative is missing or unusable, shaming people for not choosing it solves nothing.

When environmental harm gets framed as individual moral failure, attention shifts away from the structural changes that would actually matter. It's not an accident that oil companies spent decades popularizing the idea of the personal carbon footprint.

Just spectacular ❤️💫

Been told by more informed mastos, that Ive been hoodwinked with this image. Still amazing, and far better for my soul than more of, caring and mental health things, politics and the middle East which has been my sad staple.

Sorry folks if you were as fooled as me.

Hot take: The Artemis livestream is a damning indictment of modern computing devices. It seems like half the radio chatter is troubleshooting email delivery problems, confusing user interfaces, or devices not booting or connecting. Literal astronauts with years of training can’t make our stuff work.

Yesterday later afternoon, our site experienced a massive traffic spike, sustaining almost 1Gbps for about 50 minutes.

What happened?
Our diagnostic tools revealed that a single IP address was stuck in a high-speed loop, requesting a single video file over 54,000 times in just 50 minutes—an average of more than 1,000 requests per minute. This was likely a broken client or an aggressive scraper.

Why there was no impact on you:
Crucially, there was no performance impact on other users. Because of our multi-layered Nginx caching, these requests were served directly from memory cache. This prevented the spike from ever reaching our Ruby/Puma application servers, keeping the site fast and responsive for everyone else while we identified the culprit.

This event was a perfect stress test for our new server environment, and it passed with flying colors.
Thanks for being part of SFBA! 🌉

I've just started inventing nonsense-but-folksy-sounding things to say to my kids when they have problems, like "you can't crush garlic with good intentions"
You see kids, phone books were like DNS for phone numbers. @neil https://mastodon.neilzone.co.uk/@neil/116344815334837734

"DNS is the Internet's phone book" This ceased to be a useful analogy many, many years ago!
