My letter to the editor made it into this month's Harper's!! tldr: Wikipedia is great and degrading it is not so great
I asked DALL-E to create stickers to illustrate collaboration in the #Wikimedia movement. They are quite impressive but what's curious is the laptops almost always wind up with an Apple logo on them. Is this just an artifact that a lot of the training data in DALL-E are the ubiquitous Mac laptops? #Wikipedia

twitter's business model was simple:

1. celebrities show their entire arses
2. normal people hurl rotten tomatoes at them
3. show ads to group 2.

it is not clear that a single person at twitter understood this

Not your typical @wikipedia hatnote. But for George Santos, something special. #Wikipedia #Wikimedia @depthsofwiki
Congrats to the anonymous furry who made it onto the English wikipedia front page by standing next to a freddy fazbear cosplayer
Can you imagine if Elon Musk could *buy* wikipedia? Put your shit in non-profits people.

I was recently interviewed for this great piece on the #onlinesafetybill which, in its current form, threatens the very existence of #Wikipedia in Wales and the rest of the UK .

How the new UK tech law hurts Wikipedia

Authoritarian Tech is a weekly newsletter tracking how people in power are abusing technology and what it means for the rest of us. Also in this edition: Meta keeps mistreating content from Palestine, Venezuelans cast primary ballots (despite censorship) and Apple has a problem with Jon Stewart

Interesting: Web Summit has named a new CEO: Katherine Maher — previously CEO and executive director of the @wikimediafoundation (between 2019 and 2021) #Wikimedia #Wikipedia https://techcrunch.com/2023/10/30/web-summit-ceo-katherine-maher/
TechCrunch is part of the Yahoo family of brands

Oh, and also add Steve Harwell, lead singer of Smash Mouth who was posted to "Recent deaths" but was pulled off later on. #WikipediaITN #wikipedia #wikimedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:In_the_news/Candidates#(Pulled)_RD:_Steve_Harwell
Other famous folks who never made it to the front page of #WikipediaITN "Recent deaths" section, despite being very famous: Alan Thicke, Merle Haggard, Norm MacDonald. They all have the unusual quality of being famous but not famous enough to have a fleet of fans to reference their filmography/discography fully. #Wikipedia #Wikimedia
