I'm reasonably sure that the hostile reaction that so many men have to the idea that all masculinity is toxic under patriarchy - or, that is, the concept that their participation in an oppressive ideology is, in fact, oppressive - is due to the fact that so many men tie their very core selves to that oppression.
that knot, for which patriarchy constantly rewards men for tightening, is so strong and so intertwined with their identities that feminists asking a man to untie it reads to him as though he must murder his very ego.
a man will thus characterize any such demands as violence against hin, and he'll react with some combination of attacks ("the mean feminazis hate me!"), denial ("my masculinity is non-toxic!"), and publicly airing his internal agony in a bid for mass empathy ("I'm not a bad guy, am I...?").
the twist in all of this is that the people whom he hurts every day through his participation in patriarchal oppression endure this agony every single day they live under institutional male supremacy. but the man unwilling to do the work would rather perpetuate that mass oppression than endure the temporary discomfort of reinventing himself.
Boobs.
