They stole my voice with AI

Elecrow—an electronics company that makes Pi and ESP accessories—used an AI voice for multiple tutorial series which sounds _almost exactly_ like me.

I never consented to have my voice used to promote Elecrow's products.

Woo hoo! My first feature (non project) article for @makemagazine about three amazing teachers who run maker spaces in their schools is in the latest issue of Make, and also live online now (no paywall):

Making Makers: Building Makerspaces in K–12 Parochial Schools

Running a makerspace can be challenging and expensive, but schools that do so often see rewards in increased student engagement, collaboration, and enthusiasm for problem solving.

Edited 22/01/23: Sadly, my colleague's wife's condition has deteriorated to the point where she has near zero mobility, and is likely to need hospis care very soon.

I'm going to leave this thread up, in an edited form, in case someone else can make good use of the information and ideas that people very kindly offered. However, no further replies are needed.

You are more than welcome to link here, too.

Thank you all again x

Calling out to the electronically minded. It's just possible you might be able to drastically improve someone's life!

I have a colleague whose wife suffers from #ALS. For anyone unfamiliar with this dreadful condition, you can have a read up here: https://www.als.org/understanding-als/what-is-als. Short version is that it's degenerative, cruel and, eventually, terminal.

There are a number of aids that sufferers can use. In this case, a button that can be pressed to summon help when needed. The cruelty here is that the person who needs to use it no longer has the finger strength to do so. [Edit: video removed as it no longer feels appropriate to share].

This is where you might come in. Is there someone out there who can design something better? Something that's soft-touch enough to be useful, but not so soft it causes a bunch of false alarms?

Thank you! x

What is ALS?

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. There is no cure for ALS yet.

PSA: Google has now begun to roll-out the Ad Topics "feature" onto Android itself. It's not just in Chrome you have to disable the settings. Please #Boost to spread awareness.

If you didn't get the pop-up screen on your Android device (it looks like the first two screenshots), to opt-out of these settings:

  • Go to your device Settings
  • Press "Google"
  • Press "Ads"
    • While you're here, press the "Delete Advertising ID" button and delete it
  • Press "Ad Privacy"
  • Review: "Ad Topics", "App-suggested ads", and "App Measurement". Make sure all are labelled as "OFF". (This page will look like the third screenshot)
  • If you don't see "Ad Privacy" in Step 4 then it means that it hasn't been rolled out to you yet. You might need to wait and check back in a couple of days to see if/when it has been implemented to disable these settings.

EDIT: There's another setting to review. In step 2, scroll to "Personalize using shared data". Turn everything off.

I *really* don't think his marital status is relevant. This is shameful reporting.
Hey folks, so looks like I lost most of my former followers in my server move. If you used to follow me and see this check to see if you follow this account. That is, if you still want to :) And if you wouldn’t mind boosting this it would help find my former network. If it says “cancel follow request”, do that and re-follow. The request thing is a bug and it will never work. Thanks!

I never tooted about this but Consumer Reports picked up on my video and made a more professional stink about my car's brake lights!
    https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-safety/brake-lights-can-fail-to-provide-fair-warning-on-some-evs-a9533519285/

And now! Hyundai just announced they will do a "field service campaign" to fix the issue starting in July. Yay!

Brake Lights Can Fail to Provide Fair Warning on Some Electric Vehicles

In Consumer Reports' tests, the brake light on some Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia EVs don’t always illuminate as the vehicle decelerates during regenerative braking.
