I never tooted about this but Consumer Reports picked up on my video and made a more professional stink about my car's brake lights!
https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-safety/brake-lights-can-fail-to-provide-fair-warning-on-some-evs-a9533519285/

And now! Hyundai just announced they will do a "field service campaign" to fix the issue starting in July. Yay!

Brake Lights Can Fail to Provide Fair Warning on Some Electric Vehicles

In Consumer Reports' tests, the brake light on some Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia EVs donโ€™t always illuminate as the vehicle decelerates during regenerative braking.

@TechConnectify This is the kind of influencer I can get behind! Well done, you!
@TechConnectify thatโ€™s amazing. Great work!
@TechConnectify HOLY SHIT that's awesome! Good job
@TechConnectify hurrah congratulations!
@TechConnectify alright but when are they picking up on your videos painting led christmas lights? That's the real dilema that we need consumer reports on.
@telnetlocalhost hahah, glad I'm not the only one who had that thought ๐Ÿ˜‚
@TechConnectify excellent news! Congrats!
@TechConnectify Yay for raising awareness!
Thank you!
@TechConnectify Honestly, I'm glad this picked up some attention. I picked up a Hi5 myself recently, and haven't used i-Pedal mode at all because of the concerns presented.
@TechConnectify result! My Kia EV6 looks forward to the same updateโ€ฆ
@TechConnectify I saw a truck recently that had mind-blowing brake lights which made me immediately think of you. It was a fuel tanker and the back side of the tank was entirely surrounded by a large ring that lit up when braking. It was quite impressive.
@TechConnectify Hallelujah! I've almost hit the EV in front of me enough times that I now give them a much bigger space, cuz it's such a surprise when they slow down and no brake lights are on!

@TechConnectify prรฉcise and justified complaints that create a real improvement !

Great job
You're the break lights guy know !

@TechConnectify Excellent! Next stop... heat pumps being mass adopted (and maybe US households having kettles ;) )

@TechConnectify Great news, pity they didn't pick up the brake lights as turn indicator one too!

(a are sight here in NZ but think of you when see classic US cars doing it)

@TechConnectify That video was solid work to prove your case, glad it's being taken seriously and addressed.
@TechConnectify Hey, nice! I just picked up an Ioniq 5 a month or two ago, and I love the i-pedal mode, but I was kind of horrified to learn about this brake light issue; I had assumed the lights would turn on based on the torque command or deceleration. Thanks for calling attention to this!
@TechConnectify Now if we could only do something about the jerk when switching between levels; I really wish it were smoother when using the paddles to change regen braking levels.
@TechConnectify as a motorcyclist who occasionally has to use the street I really appreciated your spotlight on this dangerous problem.
@robincapper I was thinking: do you ever take your foot off the brake when the car is stationary? I do a lot, at traffic lights when Iสผm in front and have the clutch in after shifting into first. I thought it would be obvious that the car isnสผt moving.
@jackyan this is about the brake lights not illuminating when the car is regen only 'braking'. TC could decelerate his Ionic from hwy speed to 0 with at a decent rate (0.2g from memory) without any brake light activation
@robincapper I know, I watched his old YouTube video. But the linked article suggests that for Mercedes-Benz, the brake lights should be engineered so they are always on if the car is stationary (presumably when the ignition is on). And that seems like overkill because there are plenty of situations where itสผs obvious the car is stationary.

@jackyan But yes, also do that sometimes. I also use in gear lift off engine braking and 'look ahead' gapping to avoid needless start/stop, gear changes, & braking in motorway nose/tail traffic too.* Suspect it's a lot less aggressive than electric regen braking but haven't got much driver experience of that.

* Why I see little advantage of having an auto in commuter runs

@robincapper Makes sense, I do this as well. Regen is good, and you can set it to be less aggressive, almost (but not quite) apeing engine braking.

@TechConnectify just think, it took HUNDREDS of TikToks to get Hyundai/Kia to do something about the fact that their cars could be stolen with a USB cable

But only ONE Technology Connections video

That ain't nothin'!

@TechConnectify A curious thing I've noticed is there's been a handful of occasions where I've had to slam on my breaks when following behind a Tesla because they slowed significantly w/o showing break lights, so even the accelerometer based method isn't flawless.

@TechConnectify When I've mentioned this elsewhere I usually get a handful of Tesla-hards jumping down my throat about me being wrong and demanding proof.

Sorry, I don't have a dash cam. Though Tesla break lights are so small and dim it is plausible it's just because I couldn't see them when they're being illuminated by sunlight. But that's a different issue.

@TechConnectify Your work is much appreciated! Iโ€™m still waiting on my IONIQ 5 preorder from January 2022 ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ so maybe my car will be fixed day 1 ! ๐Ÿ˜Ž You may have saved quite a few people from a lot of trouble sir. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘
@TechConnectify and peole say complaining doesn't get stuff done. If we don't speak up, how are others gonna listen?
@TechConnectify as a fellow Ionic 5 owner thank you for your service.
@TechConnectify @eniko Look at that, thereโ€™s a regulation in the EU for what deceleration should require the brake lights to turn on, but not in the US. Colour me surprised.
@TechConnectify Nice work! It's good to know that some companies listen to their customers and actually care about what they think. It's a rare thing these days.
@TechConnectify Thanks. I'll be watching for a "fix". I purchased an Ioniq5 in Dec 2022.
@Isocat this is probably relevant to your interests
@TechConnectify powerful ๐Ÿ’ช nice ๐Ÿ‘
@TechConnectify thanks for posting that video, and congrats for making an impact on public safety
