the old line "the revolution will not be televised" is attempting to make the point that mass media are a tool of power and will not, under any circumstances, tell their stories in a way that truly challenges that power
the editorial boards of the world aren't asleep at the wheel, they know what they're doing by portraying the situation as less horrible than they is, and by not describing protests in ways that encourage more protests.
For people starting to think about this at a country level, I’d add one other dimension. People are starting to realise that depending on US big tech is unhealthy, but it’s unhealthy for two reasons:
Only one of these is new. A lot of folks in the EU are now talking as if the goal is to have EU-based big tech. I would caution against that, the goal should be to have a thriving competitive ecosystem where there are multiple suppliers in any given space, where lock in is hard, and where innovation isn’t killed by the incumbent because it would eat into existing revenue streams.

Spotify’s CEO Daniel Ek has raised €600M for his new startup, which is developing AI TECH FOR WAR. Ek still owns 9% of Spotify, but has 37% voting control. His net worth went from $2.5B to $10B in the last two years alone, on the back of paying musicians a pittance in royalties.
And don’t forget:
• Spotify spent $250M of your subscription dollars to invite Joe Rogan to spew his disinformation on their platform.
• They’re still trying to embrace and extinguish Podcasts.
• They’re developing in-house, AI-generated “music” so users will play them (royalty-free) instead of music created by humans (who demand royalty).
And now, he’s using his wealth, created by your subscriptions, to fund tech that will use AI to literally murder humans in war.
Stop funding him. Quit Spotify now.
