@corpsmoderne @PH7831 @cliffle when LLMs both write and review the papers, at least they will technically be peer-reviewed.

Elsevier, everyone's favorite copyright maximalist closed-access publisher, argues that their high costs are necessary because they're the arbiter of quality.

The arbiter of quality keeps publishing LLM-written papers. Thanks for making my argument for me, Elsevier! They didn't even read it.

'Shocking and horrifying': Israel destroys AP office in Gaza

An Israeli airstrike has destroyed a high-rise building that was home to The Associated Press’ offices in the Gaza Strip. The airstrike came despite hysterical calls from the news agency to halt the impending attack. AP called the strike “shocking and horrifying.” Although no one was hurt, the airstrike demolished an office that was like a second home for AP journalists. Press-freedom groups condemned the attack and accused the military of trying to censor coverage of its relentless six-day offensive against Hamas militants. The military claimed that Hamas militants used the building for sophisticated operations, but provided no evidence.

Like, I really don't get why so many of you are so eager to have statistical models write code for you.

I've been arguing for literally my whole career that the actual writing isn't the hard part of software development. But wow, did everyone take that in the wrong direction recently.

Understanding the system is the hard and valuable part. And I genuinely don't know how you think you're going to do that if you never get to do any of the safe and easy interactions with the system.

OMG he's so close and then he fumbles. He says it started happening before vaccine. Infections increased massively in 2021 but somehow he concludes it was the vaccine.

If I'm reading this properly, 0.12% of all Canadians have now died of COVID-19.

That's official deaths, not excess deaths, which would capture more COVID related "dying withs"

Supporting Israel and supporting Palestinians are not at odds. In fact, I'd argue they're inexorably linked.

It means supporting the Palestinians in Gaza, who deserve dignity, self-actualization, and self-rule. It means supporting the folks in the West Bank and the Palestinians who are Israeli citizens (the folks we often call Arab Israelis) who were just as terrorized by Hamas on October 7th.

As Israel is shut down and on the brink of war, many of these people are unable to work and earn a living, and may even be subject to implicit or explicit bigotry, or at least distrust, simply because they look like other people who did awful things.

Compassion can and must exist through war. It means not ignoring the threat Israel is under or the loss of lives and security, while also believing in the rights of Arabs to live fulfilled, peaceful, and joyful lives as well.

I can't help but notice the new Apple laptops rate "Video Playback 22 hours, Web Browsing 15 hours" under battery life.

Congratulations web developers everywhere, it's now more computationally intense to render a webpage than video playback!

3. On Thursday, November 16th, 6:30 PM at UNSW., I'll be giving the Wallace Wurth lecture "The Art of Skepticism in a Data-Driven World", hosted by Rob Brooks. I believe there is to be a book signing afterward.
