1. In five days, I'm headed to Australia: Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne. I can't wait. So many colleagues to meet and birds to see!

For those who are interested in such things, I'll be giving a few public talks in addition to a number of academic lectures.

The public talks will mostly focus on something I've been thinking about lately, "The Crisis of Human Collective Decision-Making in a Social Media World".

Details below.

2. On Wednesday November 15th, 5 PM at Macquarie University, I'll be giving a public lecture on that subject.

3. On Thursday, November 16th, 6:30 PM at UNSW., I'll be giving the Wallace Wurth lecture "The Art of Skepticism in a Data-Driven World", hosted by Rob Brooks. I believe there is to be a book signing afterward.

4. On Tuesday November 21 at 6 PM at the Queensland University of Technology. I'll again be speaking about the crisis of human decision-making in a social media world. My understanding is that there will a reception beforehand at 5:00 PM.

5. Finally, on Monday Nov 27th at 11 AM at the University of Melbourne I'm giving the Crisis lecture at a venue that I believe is public or at least quasi-public. I'll post a correction if I hear otherwise.

6. One more public talk, again in Sydney. On Friday November 17th, I'll be speaking on "The Impediments to High-Risk, High-Return Research" as part of the Trust in Knowledge seminar series at Sydney University. This talk may be a bit more technical than the others but I'll endeavor to make it accessible to as broad an audience as possible.

7. Also, I want to thank AIMOS (https://aimos.community/) and the Queensland University of Technology for making this entire trip possible. They are generously funding my travel from the US to Australia, and putting me up during the time I'll be in Brisbane.

I'm particularly looking forward to attending and presenting at AIMOS 2023 from Nov 21-23. A big part of my research program involves metaresearch, and Australia has a very strong presence in this area.

@ct_bergstrom Welcome to Brisbane (soon).
@ct_bergstrom this sounds fascinating. Been involved with scheme from Villum Foundation for a few years. Has 3 changes to try and fund more high-risk, high-return research:
1) Blind review (so no track record)
2) Each panelist has a ‘golden ticket’ which they can use to ensure an application is funded regardless of other panel members
3) 3 page application
Does your model suggest this might work?
And can those of us unlucky enough not to be in Australia find out more about the model…

@drstevenwooding yeah for sure. Golden ticket should help.

here are the two papers I will be talking about

@ct_bergstrom If you can get to Healesville Sanctuary while in Melbourne, you will see almost every Australian animal you want to see, including a superb glass sided creek with playtpus.
@DavidPenington That sounds amazing. I went there as a kid in the early 80s and it was amazing even then.

@ct_bergstrom @DavidPenington

Don't forget the Spirits of the Sky bird show!

@DavidPenington @ct_bergstrom if you come to my place in Armidale you can see a platypus in the wild!
@ct_bergstrom I can't be there Carl! I'm so upset. I'll be in Sydney for a conference.
@ct_bergstrom Mate. You've landed at one of the best places on the planet for gregarious bird-life. Probably not your first time there but the Dandenong ranges are the place to discover that corvids take a back-seat to the boisterous party-birds of Australia.
@ct_bergstrom Hi. Can you point me to a written version or versions of some of this work, please?

@dstephenlindsay

I haven't written up this version yet as it is still very much in progressin my head, but some of the important elements going into it are Chapter 2 of my book Calling Bullshit and this paper: https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2025764118

@ct_bergstrom @dstephenlindsay thank you for sharing the paper! Would love to watch this talk but the time zones make it a bit tricky sadly
@ct_bergstrom Raoul Mulder there is a great guy. And the perfect person to go birding with.
@ct_bergstrom University of Queensland. They get a bit snarky if you get it wrong.
@jswilkins @ct_bergstrom Actually, that’s not correct either, the lecture is hosted by and held at Queensland University of Technology (Gardens Point campus).
@jswilkins Shit. I should know, given that (1) I teach at the University of Washington in Seattle but am often assumed to be at Washington University in St. Louis, and (2) I offered a friend fifty bucks to put "Penn State" on his title slide when giving an endowed lecture at U. Penn.
@ct_bergstrom Should I mention that it's St Louis? Only because my daughter lives there...

@jswilkins It gets worse John.

I was fucking born there.

@ct_bergstrom Well I hope you enjoy your trip to Brysbun, Sidnee and Melbun.

@ct_bergstrom welcome to Queensland..so glad you can make it...

hey @mackayim2022

Did you see who is in town??
