she/her Opening to Love & withness of God in all things. Living on the wild and open pacific northwest coast—near the great ice cream and cheese
Sorry all… have been away for awhile. Still here and hope to check in more. How is everyone doing?

Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (NY-8) has been unanimously elected leader of House Democrats, the first Black person to lead either party in either chamber.

A new chapter with new leadership.

Well done, Mr. Leader!

If you enjoy someone's post on #Mastodon go ahead and click the star. If someone tells you that's meaningless because there's no #algorithm, ignore them. Sure, boost the post too if you want others to also see the post, but don't think telling someone you like what they posted is somehow unimportant. In real life I don't tell someone, "good job," or "well said," or "I love that," for the sake of some algorithm, I do it because I'm human and they are too. It's fundamental to being truly social.
#confession time:
I DID go online shopping on #BlackFriday. But I found an Artisan #kitchenaid mixer on $100 off sale with free shipping and then a bonus coupon for another 25% off the price. I promise I will use it often for #hospitality and make up for the encounter with #consumerism. Fresh muffins, bread, cookies coming soon—anyone want to come over for #coffee?
Scrolling through the federated timeline. Almost no one using #hashtags. It’s like people are just documenting their lives. And that’s fine. It’s just. Why be on a system that helps connect people and then just leave random posit notes in places (times) that almost no one will encounter? Y’all could just keep a diary. But I know one thing. If others interact you get a little rush. We are sad, we humans. #whywemastodon
I'm sure folks have good feedback on how this site could be improved, but I must say: it is honestly refreshing to be in a space without hateful nonsense. It's quite lovely.
@ameredith Hi— just checking to see how you are doing in this endeavor and willingness to blaze a trail.
As the crazy world races and rages I have a choice. I can decide to be spun and battered by it, or I can exit the chaos to find a small stone along the pathway, wait for others who come by who also need rest, and move over to share space.
Little signs of beauty are everywhere.

This piece on Wired about Black Twitter is worth your time. It's something I've been thinking about a lot, about how uneven a migration to a new space ends up being.

It also is one thing I'm eyeing about Mastodon. There's a danger that servers become silos if we aren't intentional. If you listen to some of the Black scholars in my field, they are saying as much. Twitter makes their work visible across groups.

So how do we federate for inclusion? It will be a challenge.

There Is No Replacement for Black Twitter

A series of missteps by Elon Musk has called the fate of the platform’s cultural engine into question.
