Qualtrics Survey | Social Media Platform Migration Survey

The purpose of this research is to explore the factors that lead to and challenges of leaving and joining social media platforms, including federated social media. This research will help us to understand how socio-technical infrastructures are regenerated and remain resilient from influxes of newcomers, in order to inform better designs and processes.

One of the decisive moments in my understanding of #LLMs and their limitations was when, last autumn, @emilymbender walked me through her Thai Library thought experiment.

She's now written it up as a Medium post, and you can read it here. The value comes from really pondering the question she poses, so take the time to think about it. What would YOU do in the situation she outlines?

Trans legislative risk map was updated and omg it’s so bad. It’s so bad. Holy shit :( https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/may-anti-trans-legislative-risk-map
May Anti-Trans Legislative Risk Map

The map of anti-trans risk has polarized into two Americas - one where trans people have full legal protections, and one where they are persecuted by the state.

The "economy" will shrink to fit within the earth systems of which is it a subsidiary. The status quo wants it to seem like that's the debate, but ya' can't debate physics, biogeochemistry, and ecology. The debate is about how much of that shrinking is chosen vs imposed and whether the shrinking subscribes to just and ethical principles or not.

A truly amazing and exhaustively cited act of investigative journalism by the phenomenal @zinnia

It turns out that virtually ALL of the sham "science" behind the anti-trans movement can be traced directly back to a very small number of purely ideologically driven "doctors" citing one another over and over again to try to give the impression that standard evidence based trans healthcare is controversial.

It's basically the scientific equivalent of writing a blog with nothing more than your own opinions, your friend writes an article citing your blog, another friend writes an article citing both of you, and then showing up in front of public health boards saying "see, here's 3 articles showing how I'm right!"

In any normal and reasonable political environment, these quacks would be laughed out of the room with such flimsy "evidence". Yet because the far right has captured statehouses across the country, they're laundering this junk science into "real" science.

The far-right law firm Alliance Defending Freedom offered a Florida anti-trans hate group $15,000 to “refute” the WPATH Standards of Care “for use in litigation”

In rural Australia in the 1940s, my mother had rocks thrown at her and was branded a 'communist' because her father, a school headmaster, advocated for establishing a public library.

In the Canadian province where I now reside, the Catholic Church controlled libraries -- and thus access to information -- until the 1960s.

We forget how recent the democratisation of knowledge is -- how transformative such institutions were and how hard-won.

We should not part with them easily.

This dad absolutely nails supporting his daughter. 🥰

Mt St Helens on May 14, 2023. The next day, a landslide took out the only road leading up to the Johnston Ridge Observatory, stranding a dozen people (and a dog) who had to be airlifted out and cutting off access to the area.

I think the mountain wanted to be alone.
