@cornelioid I just saw this today: https://pivot-to-ai.com/2025/06/05/generative-ai-runs-on-gambling-addiction-just-one-more-prompt-bro/ Not exactly a knowledgeable commentator but... he does link some other interesting sources.
Generative AI runs on gambling addiction — just one more prompt, bro!

You’ll have noticed how previously normal people start acting like addicts to their favourite generative AI and shout at you like you’re trying to take their cocaine away. Matthias Döpm…

Pivot to AI
@cornelioid I definitely don't disagree with anything in the piece specifically, but I feel like the author (and potentially whoever is doing these experiments) isn't seeing the forests for the trees. Trying to rely on humans perception of time and motor ideation, two things we are notoriously terrible at comprehending, to determine if we have free will is just nutso to me. I'm not even entirely sure what free will even means anymore. As a general concept applied to humans distilled down to simple beings it makes sense, but when you introduce truly insane levels of complexity it of starts to lose meaning.
@cornelioid As an experimentalist I can tell you it is a huge mistake to try and draw any conclusions about free will from anything we now know about the brain, especially this.

@codeofamor Don't look in the mirror in this state. I wear my sleep mask to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
@rvaweather I just heard a transformer blow (Northern VA).
@rasterweb The real problem is that the incentive to steal it is very high. This would be gone or striped of some parts in 20m in NYC.
@timClicks This is fantastic! I'm a research physicist (experimental nuclear physics) and I work with a bunch of high energy astrophysics guys. I gave a similar (but not as good, and shorter) talk and was met with a lot of "well that's cool, but why would we go through the learning curve if we have Python?" Any ideas? The physics community is extremely resistant to change and even getting people to jump to Python was a herculean effort.
I am really proud of this talk about adopting #rust, aka #rustlang, at work. I spent many hours thinking about what would work and I am quite happy with the result. I hope that you enjoy watching! https://youtu.be/4DLhTPsg8QQ
