I would rather see your shittiest most half-assed napkin doodle than a single frame of your finest AI slop.

@summerfallwinter I just stared at this for a while, then beckoned @jazzburn over and we both stared for a while.

Wow.

@nonehitwonder @jazzburn thank you for the inspirational quote to jot down! (Don't look too closely at the paper, it was indeed used as a napkin yesterday)
@summerfallwinter @nonehitwonder @jazzburn Napkins in your house must be used to mop up overspilling artistic ability, this is incredible and I love it!
@summerfallwinter @nonehitwonder sorry, that doesn't look half-assed

@dat ha! You should see what my whole-ass looks like... wait, no...

(I've been practicing hand-lettering for a few years now, so this was indeed a C+ effort. Maybe B-.)

@summerfallwinter @dat Yes please! Is there somewhere we can see that? Er, “that” being your whole-assed *work*, I don’t know you well enough for anything else >_<
@crowbriarhexe @dat a company paid me to do their signs for a bit, so that was indeed a whole-ass effort.
@crowbriarhexe @dat I also like making love puns for my love, and cards for friends, and sometimes a page or three in my calendar/journal/to-do-list gets fancy.

@summerfallwinter

The fact that this very nicely made text art is "half-assed" for you, because you already spent a bunch of time refining your art which you did (semi?)-professionally, actually just shows the real appeal of ai-"art" tools.

I mean don't get me wrong, I appreciate your talent, but I don't have it, and so for me AI is a handy tool to do visual art in the few free minutes I have to do that.

#aiArt

@nicemicro @summerfallwinter and here you are proving your refusal to engage with artists or develop talent is fuel for the companies that *stole all of that*, grinding up years of experience and outputs from labour into the gruel you use instead.

There is always another way. You don't need to fake squirly fonts. They already exist, or you could commission an artist, or even just ask a friend who likes doodling. You could use something else

But you choose to patronise engines of theft.

@summerfallwinter @nonehitwonder *applause.gif* this. This is my Fediverse.
@LibertyForward1 thank you! Down with AI! Viva la napkin!
@summerfallwinter @nonehitwonder Do you mind if I download that?

@purserj I don't mind, but these are @nonehitwonder 's words that I wrote.

(If I had known more than 3 people would see this, I would've written @nonehitwonder somewhere too!)

@summerfallwinter @purserj it's alright. I sincerely love it, and I don't need to own the words. ❤️🖖🏼
@summerfallwinter @nonehitwonder
That's incredible but the anarchist in me wants to see a video of it being dropped into a bowl of water so I can watch all the colours bleed together mixing and swirling into eachother. Again, bravo 😂
@summerfallwinter @nonehitwonder i would love to be such an artist with lettering, beautiful
@the_turtle @summerfallwinter hmmm...posting AI slop in a thread explicitly celebrating human work...
@nonehitwonder @summerfallwinter sure, we're nothing if not ironic.

@summerfallwinter Why would anyone automate their possibility of personal artistic development?

Why would someone rather be a judge than a creator?

@gimulnautti lack of talent, having other things to do while having only 24 hours a day.
@summerfallwinter AI slop is to art as ultra-processed food is to a healthy meal
@summerfallwinter @nonehitwonder that's a very nice napkin.... napkin? hey, that's toilet paper!
@kwramm you're right that it's not a napkin, but it's actually a paper towel
@summerfallwinter you either got small paper towels or giant pens 😁
@kwramm it's a half sheet of paper towel, folded in half (so it wouldn't bleed through to the desk). So, a quarter the size of a regular square of paper towel. Small-ish sized for sure.

@summerfallwinter @nonehitwonder
Say no more.

Chewed-up pencil on old promotional notebook with about a minute of doodling:

@summerfallwinter @nonehitwonder
I know exactly how this can be used...
If I can come to a proper deal with a new job, watch me hand that in as my notice
@Sonic2k @summerfallwinter I've got my fingers and toes crossed for you!
@rayglittersoft @summerfallwinter it doesn't exist yet, but I like the idea of AI; not in our current world, but in one that values human lives.
@nonehitwonder @summerfallwinter What are you on about? Every human values human lives
@rayglittersoft @summerfallwinter yeah, but like, ALL human lives, not just their own.
@nonehitwonder Ah, you mean they are hurting people by accident?
@rayglittersoft sometimes, although I would clarify it more as carelessness than an accident, but increasingly and more often than not it's by design.
@rayglittersoft @summerfallwinter if you're saying you like AI, but you actually mean that you like the current stable of LLMs, then I question whether you are paying attention to how they are being misused in order to hurt people, including you.
@rayglittersoft it's really hard not to think you're trolling me right now, but I don't understand what you could possibly be getting out of it. You have access to a global repository of all human knowledge; I suggest you learn about the things you like.

@nonehitwonder I do, and the things I don't like...

What do you like?

@rayglittersoft loads of things, but I can't say I like the trajectory of this conversation, because I am finding your methods of engagement to be suspicious. What, may I ask, prompted you to chime in to this thread to tell us you like AI?
@nonehitwonder A friend boosted autumn's post, so I thought it'd be worth investing
@rayglittersoft okay, I'm taking you at your word. What is it that you personally like about AI, if I may ask?

@rayglittersoft Right. Well, AI didn't invent those particular ponies; people did, and then another person took all those pictures without permission in order to teach their AI to draw ponies, and then THEY charge money for their AI to crank out ponies that are not as good and made out of stolen pony parts.

That, if you are curious, is an oversimplification of why a lot of people don't like AI.

@nonehitwonder Yeah, making money out of it is bad. Who are "THEY"?
@rayglittersoft Well, "they" are often large collections of people employed by corporate interests that are interested in making more money forever, which are themselves run by mostly white male oligarchs with a vested interest in perpetually gaining wealth and dehumanizing anyone that exists outside their immediate circle of influence, because then they can force those people to make them more money forever.
@rayglittersoft again, these are oversimplifications, and this isn't really where you should be getting this information.
@nonehitwonder "More money forever" is a bad business model, I mean, everything is built on love at the end of the day
@rayglittersoft everything worth a damn in this world definitely is.
@nonehitwonder No. Everything is built on love, those with money are just playing shops
