I'm on a mission to end #DeathByPowerpoint, so talks & lectures are more accessible and inclusive.

Switched from my research career to help academics & researchers create engaging presentations πŸ¦„βœ¨

Phew! πŸ˜… My social media hiatus is just about over. I took a break from it so I could focus on a Big Project.

I think it's been over 2 months since I've really hung out on here?

Just popping in to say hi everyone πŸ‘‹

The Big Project was a whole new online course about how to storyboard talks & lectures to make any "dry" / educational content engaging. And of course, strategies for storytelling with data.

Very excited about it πŸ™Œ

Bring back the personal blog πŸ‘

I've neglected my blog (switched to YouTube videos only last year). But I miss writing πŸ€”

Bring back personal blogging

As social media changes, Twitter slowly falls, and the landscape seems bleak, let’s take a moment and consider blogging. The personal blog built the internet, and maybe it can help fix it.

YearCompass

YearCompass | The booklet that helps close your year and plan the next one.

For example, in answering "I will say yes when", I came up with criteria. βœ…

If a proposal or project doesn't meet πŸ‘ all 4 items πŸ‘, I will not say yes.

That felt more helpful and empowering than setting up concrete yearly goals ever has for me.

I tend to hate New Year's resolutions, planning & reflections.

It often feels like a big list of unmet goals + all the things I probably won't accomplish next year.

But this year I did #YearCompass with friends & it was... awesome?

Didn't set a single goal πŸ‘ (eg I will create 3 new courses), but instead talked about things like "I will say no if" & "I will say yes when"

I encourage my #academia & #SciComm friends to check it out. We tend to be really hard on ourselves over goals.

One thing that Mastodon newcomers may not realize is how easy it is to turn Mastodon for web into essentially a Tweetdeck clone, with columns for search/compose, home, notifications, and any lists you've set up. It takes literally seconds.

Here's what mine looks like right now:
