Some atoms in a trenchcoat (coat is also atoms)

All these breathless articles about people forming weird relationships with LLMs, ruining marriages or going down psychological rabbit holes because of the emotionally compulsion-forming quality of having something that always says yes to you?

I think that’s happening to people in management, too, in their professional lives — and they’re making purchase decisions around it.

👴🏻ICE is out of control! Immunity from prosecution is out of the question for an organization that brutalizes protesters and kills citizens in the street!

👩🏿Thank you! And cops that brutalize and kill Black folk should not have immunity from prosecution either! End it!

👴🏻No wait that one's different🤡

In both personnel and institutionalized culture, ICE is a stronghold of violent authoritarianism, its existence is simply incompatible with the fundamental values of a democratic society. There is no technical or administrative fix for this. As a matter of democratic self-defense, ICE must not be tolerated.
"Let us be the repository of your passkeys" and "We may terminate your account at any time and permanently refuse to communicate with you" ... seems like a bad combination?

Back when they invented the DHS after 9/11, many of us in the US said "Dept of Homeland Security? That sounds like some dystopian Nazi-ass shit"

And all the Voices of Reason were like "stop catastrophizing, we need to come together in these trying times"

Flash forward two decades and

A friendly, gentle PSA:

Especially if you consume a lot of news these days, please be aware that all of the fear and uncertainty that is scrawled across every headline and is the basis for everything coming out of Washington activates the limbic system in your brain. That's the deep animal part of your noggin that puts you into a survival-panic. The evolutionary purpose of this system is to shut down the logical parts of your brain and make you run, *now*, to survive.

The actual, literal objective of the firehose of terror they're drowning us in is to put as many people as possible into limbic system burnout, a state of long-term, perhaps permanent, limbic system activation. So, please, check your timeline and your posting habits. Consider the ratios in there of joy to fear--and adjust things toward joy, going forward, if you need to.

They need us to feel vulnerable all the time.

If you're in limbic burnout, you can't fight back.

Limbic brain structures and burnout-A systematic review - PubMed

More profound understanding of the relationship between the burnout and the limbic system function can provide better insight into brain structures associated with the burnout syndrome. The objective of this review is to explore all evidence of limbic brain structures associated with the burnout syn …

I want you, a tech-literate person, to internalize one deep fact: Apple vs. Facebook is, and always was, kayfabe. In reality, Apple is (and always was) Facebook's chauffeur; holding its coat while it surveilled everyone. How to be sure? IABs:

Apple facilitates mass surveillance through native apps from Facebook, both directly from in-app activity, but much more insidiously, through "in-app browsers" that FB tacks onto every link you tap. And these things are *rank*.

The Rogue Court vs Modern Democracy

I wrote this two years ago, after the Court effectively abolished affirmative action. It’s even more obvious now: America can accept the Roberts Court as legitimate and its rulings as the final word - or it can have democracy in a pluralistic society.

Not both.

The Rogue Court vs Modern Democracy

America can accept this Supreme Court as legitimate and its rulings as the final word - or it can have true democracy and a functioning state. But not both.
