That big bar on my activity chart is the import of >2,600 posts from my Masto account. I'd skip over it or smush it down, but I don't control that. So I'll just wait til the timeline passes.

@CStamp @mekkaokereke Have you read “The Ministry for the Future” by Kim Stanley Robinson? It’s an interesting story of how things could unfold, including the fate of the super-rich, in light of ongoing climate catastrophes.

I’m afraid he’s a little too optimistic about our chances, but it’s a good book that explores a variety of solutions to the problem of climate change.

The super-rich don’t fare well, and I don’t want to espouse violence… But on the other hand, I wonder what harm that concentration of wealth is doing indirectly to less fortunate people.

Did you know that when you view the replies to a post, you only see the replies known to your server? The rest are hidden 🤯

If you're new to Mastodon (or maybe you've been here a while but haven't dived deeper into the community's design), I wrote up a list of things I wish I had understood when I first joined.

This doubles as a list of things that I think need to change if Mastodon is going to be a Twitter replacement. I'd really like Mastodon to succeed!

How the fuck do normal regular people get sucked into the tankie life? I was browsing their community on #lemmy and jesus christ it’s grim. I understand not trusting the US, I understand not supporting the US, and I can even see how someone might come to hate the US, but I just cannot see how you make the leap to “Ukraine deserves to lose because the US supports them”.

If you think the Ukraine should lose this war, or should cede land to appease Russia, we can’t be friends.

After bombing several museums in the historic city of Odessa on Friday, Russia has now moved on to bombing The Transfiguration Orthodox Cathedral built in Odessa in 1794.

The cathedral was a protected UNESCO World Heritage site.

Why does Russia still have a seat in the United Nations, when ISIS and Al-Qaeda does not?

One of the funniest interactions I see online, is when Americans think it's inspirational that a young white US child is raising money not to buy themselves something, but to pay off their less privileged classmates' "school lunch debt."

US readers are like 🤗"Oh that's so precious! That sweet kid has a good heart!"

And EU readers are like 😮"Wait a minute... Go back a few steps... WTF is school lunch debt?! That's a real thing?! What is wrong with your country?!"

My favorite interpretation of the Buddhist 4 noble truths taught to me by a Buddhist monk...

#1. Life sucks.
#2. Life sucks because you want things.
#3. Life can suck less if you stop wanting things.
#4. Don't be a thoughtless dick and your life wont suck as much.

A year or so back, Jim Beam put out tv ad that had this Everyday Normal Guy on some Main Street saying "We used to think The Welcoming Spirit was a small-town thing" but dur-hurr hey look, he's mixing with more cosmopolitan types and cityfolk're nice too!

As the #JasonAldean romantic ode to small-town lynching is all abuzz, I'd like to chime as someone who grew up in a burg of 750 to say this "Welcoming spirit" as a small-town thing A) is bullshit and B) the likelihood of small-town people murdering you because "you ain't from around here™" has not been higher at least since I was born, which was a time wherein interracial marriage was still illegal in a lot of the country and Black people were being beaten, firehosed and murdered for trying to exercise the right to vote in parts of it - actions supported vocally, I learned later, by kindly Christian people in my own family - so here's a song about growing up in that clime that I'd like to put forward as a counterpoint.
