The University of Zurich (UZH) plays a prominent role in Open and Reproducible Science, both nationally and internationally. With the Center of Reproducible Science (CRS) UZH pursues the goal to improve the overall reproducibility of empirical scientific research and to promote original research in reproducibility studies and methodology related to reproducibility. The CRS is a joint competence center of the Faculties of Medicine, of Science, of Business, Economics and Informatics, of Arts and Social Sciences and, the Vetsuisse Faculty. It is housed at the Faculty of Medicine in the Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute.

Who will name new plant species? Here we show that most recently described species are endemic species, and they are often described by resident taxonomists. We need to support local taxonomists in biodiverse developing countries. https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2022.1954#.Y98RZ-FJ8As.twitter

See the real problem?

It's a funny old world where if you're a political leader, claiming that "more motorways -> less CO2 emissions" can be a normal political move, but if you're student, claiming the same could get you to fail your transport planning exam...

The German Transport Ministry is missing its own climate emission reduction targets & has no credible plan to meet them.

Also, the Ministry has a new plan with lots of motorway expansion & widening, up to 10 lanes, including in densely populated areas

A nice discussion on LLMs and how they might interact with the broken aspects of academia 👻 .

https://open.substack.com/pub/lookalikes/p/publish-or-perish-and-chatgpt-a-dangerous?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

When the post asks:
"How might we move away from a reliance on text-based reports towards rich, multi-faceted research artifacts published on diverse types of platforms?" 💟
I had to think of projects like https://www.researchequals.com/ (cc @chartgerink ).

"Publish-or-perish" and ChatGPT: a dangerous mix

Academia is vulnerable to LLM-driven disruption because everything that is measured revolves around text, and what gets measured decides about your survival as a scientist. It's time to do better.
