Tiny recording backpacks reveal bats’ surprising hunting strategy

By listening in on their nightly hunts, scientists discovered that small, fringe-lipped bats are unexpectedly able to efficiently take down prey nearly their own size.

Marine Mammal Acoustics in a Noisy Ocean

This open-access book explores the potential impacts of noise on marine mammal species such as whales, dolphins, seals, seacows, and otters.

Next entry in the great #bioacoustics books.
The descriptions of the experiments and the fundamental theories is what makes this book special to me.
Only complaint I have is that some long and winding sentences to describe acoustic phenomena could have been better described as equations.
Still an absolute must read for anyone interested in the topic.

January has been quite busy for me, but the good kind of busy.
I am currently working on an application for a project with colleagues from Hamburg which gives me joy and excitement for my work I haven't had in a long time.
During the weekend I was looking into further resoruces on the topics of #ecoacoustics and #bioacoustics and thought I share this:

On this note: can someone reccomend a course/ training regarding this fields or something related like landscape ecology?

I just noticed that there is a bird sound identifying app in F-Droid since September. It is called whoBIRD and makes use of the BirdNET model by K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Chemnitz University of Technology.

It recognizes me trying to be a bird as a 42 % human whistle. So, maybe it works?

Realy intersting talk and a good overview on the current state/ problems. Loved the input about the footprint and repurposing/ upcycling old tech. Thanks a lot

On this note: I know Udo Noll is using Raspberries as listening stations/ BirdNet stations in nature reserves here in Germany and has a lot of experience with mapping and repurposing tech. Here are his main projects:
