I'm a condensed matter theorist working on qubit decoherence. From the good old American Midwest except for when it's convenient to be from somewhere else. Pianist.

It's 2023 so I'm feeling pretty post-orientation

@mjd Reading this Wikipedia article made me think of your worst maths notations examples: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mating_of_yeast

Yeast mating sexually can have two mating types. They're not called type 1 and type 2, or type A and type B. Instead, it's type a and type α.

Not a biologist, so I don't know if there's a good reason for that horrible naming.

For over a decade Philips Hue offered lights that work without sharing your data to the cloud. This is changing soon and we need your help to make some noise to convince them to revert this decision.

[Update Oct 2: data sharing to become optional] Philips Hue will force users to upload their data to Hue cloud

To control your lights you soon need to create an account and share your data with the Hue cloud.

Whenever I explain my #research at Google into mobile text editing, I'm usually met with blank stares or a slightly hostile "Everyone can edit text on their phones, right? What's the problem?"

Text editing on mobile isn't ok. It's actually much worse than you think, an invisible problem no one appreciates. I wrote this post so you can understand why it's so important.

The invisible problem – Scott Jenson

The first law of thermodynamics states that a cold body must not warm a hotter body, nor through inaction, allow a hot body to become warmer.

These two vehicles have almost the same bed size.

Reply guys are pointing out that the width of the smaller one may be less, but idk.

i'll never get over the intense special interest required for someone to post this on imdb

Okay this is messing with my head.

Arkansas borders 6 states and it's possible to travel south to enter all of them.

Men, wear skirts. This is not a command but it is a very strong suggestion. This goes especially for cishet dudes but can apply to all men. Here's why you should:

1) signals you're chill about gender, which is a very attractive trait
2) creates an atmosphere where it's safer and more normalized for people who were assigned male to experiment with their gender presentation, which as a trans woman is very appealing to me and makes me want to have sex with you
3) men look really good in skirts actually and anyone who says they don't is lying or gatekeeping (but NOT girlbossing)
4) skirts can be lifted up for easy access AND act as a privacy curtain for your partner. And dudes, I know how much you love a dual-purpose tool 🔧

I really wish more people understood that you can either engage with systems _as systems_ or you can be completely ineffective at creating change.

Saying a system is all good or all bad is nonsensical. Trying to make categorical rather than outcome and regulatory process statements about systems is nonsensical.
