When I started walking after my diabetes diagnosis, the first thing I did was buy a Fitbit Charge 3. Angie also bought one. That was December 2019 and they are now both dead.

I don't have the cash to buy a new one, but I'm already struggling with motivation.

Tracking my walking miles on a map has kept me going for more than 2,700 miles since the start of lockdown, which has made an enormous impact on my health.

I'll scrape up the cash for a Charge 5.

Wow! Someone needs to hire this kid to do market analysis to pay for med school.

(I say "kid" because they are six years younger than my daughter. In three years, I'll be calling 30-year-olds kids.)

Based on special elections and generic ballot and president approval trends, I’d say we are probably at about a 50-49 Dem senate with GA headed to runoff and 219-216 GOP house. Things could change tho

Well, I joined Mastodon. Obviously. If you found value in my research on disinformation, malign influence, and weaponized spaces on Twitter, then I hope you’ll follow me here, too! * The 1932 election was held with the same congressional districts that had been in place since 1912***. New ones were put in place for the 1934 elections.

** Unless the GOP wins the House this year.

*** The Republicans refused to redistrict after the 1920 Census.

This definitely deserves more study, since it only leaves 1998 as an oddball.

(My only published academic paper is on the impact of the economy and presidential popularity in midterm elections, but that was in 1989. I'll be 73 in 2042, but I'll be paying attention!)

Has anyone else noticed there's an interesting pattern for "asterisk midterms"? Since 1934, there have been six mid-term elections held in years that also included new Congressional districts: 1934*, 1942, 1962, 1982, 2002, and 2022.

Four of the six are on the "asterisk" list.

In 1942, the Democrats lost seats but kept control of the House and Senate. In 1982, the GOP kept the Senate and the Democrats kept the House.

*Best* case scenario for the GOP is now a *very* narrow House majority while Dems keep a 50-50 Senate majority. Worst case, Dems actually gain a Senate seat and keep the House. Either way, 2022 joins 1934, 1962, 1998 and 2002 as an "asterisk" midterm. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/will-this-be-an-asterisk-election/

Will This Be An Asterisk* Election?

In 2020, we took pains to emphasize that, although he was a significant underdog in our forecast, then-President Donald Trump could absolutely win reelection. F…

When we first started talking about deepfakes, the concern was that the fake content would be accepted as true. We quickly realized that the real risk was that the uncertainty would sow widespread doubt and allow bad actors to claim plausible deniability when they got caught. 1/

Ground current is what got me. The strike hit a tree about 15 yards away from me.

It felt like every muscle in my body contracted simultaneously.

You know the pain you feel after leg day at the gym? My whole body felt like that for about a week.

Direct strikes can be fatal, but different types of lightning strikes can kill too, including in less expected ways like a side flash or a streamer. https://bit.ly/3Uuxg2B
