One of the things they say in this blog post is:
you know how some code editors will automatically fill in a right bracket or quote when you type a left one? You type " and the result is "|"? Yeah, that drives me up the wall. It saves no time whatsoever, and it’s wrong often enough that I **waste* time having to correct for it.*

I realized I've been fighting with this for years. They're right. It inserts a lot of characters I don't want, and I frequently spend time undoing superfluous quotes and braces.

I just went into the settings.json for Visual Studio Code and set:
