if you put a webserver up on the internet. anywhere, hosting anything, you will see "the background radiation of the internet", and it looks like this:
Does anybody know a good up to date tutorial about creating an #epub file from scratch, i.e. that explain the organization and content of the metadata files with enough detail?
I times to times I makes websites into ePub to read them and I didn't like the solutions I found so far.
I guess if “They’ll come for you next” motivates people, then go for it. But damn, I really wish people could start from the assumption that the people they’re coming for *now* are also worth fighting for without any further explanation.

@danfairs @elsemusic I’ve recently just switched from Arc to Vivaldi as well. Once I got my settings dialed in, I like it quite a lot. I don’t like managing multiple browsers across my work and personal Mac, and my work uses Google Workspace, so having a chromium based browser is the best route for me personally (gmail in Firefox soaks up so much more RAM than it does in Chromium).

Anyway, just chiming in. Vivaldi is pretty cool. I paired down most of the UI elements though because boy is it opinionated.

It's amazing how different economics looks when you assume the goal is to have an EFFECTIVE system rather than an EFFICIENT system.

An efficient system uses resources maximally, thus resources are never left lying around, but needs must be waiting for resources to become available.

An effective system resolves needs maximally, doing its best to ensure no needs are left unfulfilled. This requires that resources must be kept idle for unexpected needs.

In practice, effective systems are often more long-term efficient because emergency needs are often particularly expensive.

You prayed for guidance, I sent you science.
It is not exaggeration to call it Trump's Gestapo. Terror is the goal; immigration is the first of many excuses. They will attack speech next.

Fediverse is still the most lively social network I have ever used, since MySpace in 2003. It is better than Twitter or any commercial social media platform ever was. Absolutely love being here.

The most profound thing about it is the international coverage. After the first wave of enshittification in 2010, algorithms took over, and suddenly as a polyglot I was labeled as Finnish. No more visible international posts, people only saw the Finnish ones.

I've noticed the same effect in commercial AI. It ignores the fact that I use English online 99% of the time and still replies to me in Finnish despite all instructions. Algorithms and AI label you. They assign you a language, a status, a certain type of person. There's no changing that.

The Fediverse and Mastodon are delightfully mine, yours, and truly open source - respecting privacy. Nobody's machine can tell you, "You are this, and this is why we do that."

Fuck labelers and the fog machines. Let me be me. Here, on my own server, I can embrace my weirdness and post however I want, how often I want, whenever I want, in whatever language I choose - without constantly worrying about how my identity will be perceived by a machine.

@indiewebadmin "No illegal content" by what jurisdiction? It should be clarified, as laws are not the same everywhere.

@stairjoke

By your location, the UK, and France. However, this is subject to change if the server moves.

We'll take onboard your feedback and discuss!

@indiewebadmin Interesting; good luck. Curious as to which definition of "hate speech" is planned to be used.

https://www.un.org/en/hate-speech/united-nations-and-hate-speech/international-human-rights-law

International Human Rights Law | United Nations

United Nations

@downey @indiewebadmin this link literally says that "There is no formal definition of “hate speech” in international human rights law." so can you expand on the UN definition more?

The old CoC explicitly outlines several prohibitions, does this mean those are going away?

@McNeely @downey

Hi, the UN define hate speech as “any kind of communication in speech, writing or behaviour, that attacks or uses pejorative or discriminatory language with reference to a person or a group on the basis of who they are, in other words, based on their religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, colour, descent, gender or other identity factor.”

Whilst there isn't a formal definition of hate speech in international law, the UN's definition is the easiest for us to moderate against.

@McNeely @downey

The definition above is from the UN's website at: https://www.un.org/en/hate-speech/understanding-hate-speech/what-is-hate-speech

If you have any other suggested definitions, we'd love to take a look!

@indiewebadmin @downey my concern is just that we don't loosen policies because we aren't explicitly naming prohibited actions. For example "gender" is kind of a bland and broad category where as before the server rules explicitly prohibited dead naming and misgendering. I "think economic or social origin" is supposed to be akin to casteism but I admit I'm pretty naive on that topic.

@McNeely @downey

The server guidelines will still explicitly prevent targeted misgendering and deadnaming under the 'No Abuse, Harassment or Violence' heading.

Whilst we'd love to define what each term means, we then risk making it harder for users to report posts to our moderation team.

We're trying to find the balance between simplicity and detail, helping reporters and moderators, after lessons learnt from the more complex Newsmast Community Guidelines.

@indiewebadmin @downey first off, thanks for taking the time to engage with this. I understand the risk of defining everything explicitly and why an org might not want to.

I'm just glad to see you the thought process, I really do appreciate you engaging here with me on this.

@McNeely @downey

No problem!

We know decisions like this affect the community here so we really want to make sure that you and others on indieweb.social feel listened to and trust that you can come to us with your thoughts.
