@indiewebadmin Interesting; good luck. Curious as to which definition of "hate speech" is planned to be used.

@downey @indiewebadmin this link literally says that "There is no formal definition of “hate speech” in international human rights law." so can you expand on the UN definition more?

The old CoC explicitly outlines several prohibitions, does this mean those are going away?

@McNeely @downey

Hi, the UN define hate speech as “any kind of communication in speech, writing or behaviour, that attacks or uses pejorative or discriminatory language with reference to a person or a group on the basis of who they are, in other words, based on their religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, colour, descent, gender or other identity factor.”

Whilst there isn't a formal definition of hate speech in international law, the UN's definition is the easiest for us to moderate against.

@McNeely @downey

The definition above is from the UN's website at: https://www.un.org/en/hate-speech/understanding-hate-speech/what-is-hate-speech

If you have any other suggested definitions, we'd love to take a look!

@indiewebadmin @downey my concern is just that we don't loosen policies because we aren't explicitly naming prohibited actions. For example "gender" is kind of a bland and broad category where as before the server rules explicitly prohibited dead naming and misgendering. I "think economic or social origin" is supposed to be akin to casteism but I admit I'm pretty naive on that topic.

@McNeely @downey

The server guidelines will still explicitly prevent targeted misgendering and deadnaming under the 'No Abuse, Harassment or Violence' heading.

Whilst we'd love to define what each term means, we then risk making it harder for users to report posts to our moderation team.

We're trying to find the balance between simplicity and detail, helping reporters and moderators, after lessons learnt from the more complex Newsmast Community Guidelines.

@indiewebadmin @downey first off, thanks for taking the time to engage with this. I understand the risk of defining everything explicitly and why an org might not want to.

I'm just glad to see you the thought process, I really do appreciate you engaging here with me on this.

@McNeely @downey

No problem!

We know decisions like this affect the community here so we really want to make sure that you and others on indieweb.social feel listened to and trust that you can come to us with your thoughts.
