So here's what I've learned.
Mastodon isn't Twitter.
And that's by design.
You've grown used to things designed to give you that anger rush.
Mastodon is very deliberately built to avoid that.
The temptation is to replicate your Twitter experience.
Picking arguments, amplifying trolls.
Please don't.
This isn't your house, people here put time into building it.
Content warnings, ALT tags.
Don't turn it into a replica of the mess you just left.
If you miss the fights, the birdsite is still there.
Good news for #climate and #environment Mastodonians: The Bloomberg Green paywall is down during #COP27. Follow our coverage of the summit and click around our archive to your heart’s content at https://www.bloomberg.com/green
Bloomberg Green - Bloomberg

Climate news and data-driven insights from Bloomberg's global newsroom covering the latest in science, environmental impacts, zero-emission tech and green finance — with a focus on solutions.

Woah - German government has got its own Mastodon instance and most of the ministries and many agencies already have accounts.
Verification problem at least partially solved - just need to check the domain is right!
I've also seen newspapers like theatlantic.com set up instances themselves. Looks like verification will be worked out sooner or later.

perhaps #energytwitter might make it’s own #energytransition and become #energytooter 🤓

Hey #climate, #energy and #auspol folks. I think the recent front page piece from The Economist is worth reading, mainly as an example of how not to cover this “possibility and probability of holding/returning to 1.5°C” topic, as it continues to unfold. My personal perspective is that “totem” is a very poor choice of words to describe 1.5°C. As Pasifika person I find it offensive. I’m across all the relevant expert evidence on the possibility and probability of the 1.5°C target, having been a climate litigator for years, and now running a program focussed on giving the Great Barrier Reef a future. Being across the varying views from eminent experts is my day job. 1.5°C is not a “totem”. It is a scientific target. My totem, of my homeland, a low lying island very threatened above 1.5°C, is the Kulu Kulu dove. I feel it needs to be asked, how is it respectful to frame the piece in that way? I certainly don’t pretend to speak on behalf any of the hugely diverse Pasifika community, including my own, but I do think it’s worth reflecting. (See @Ket [email protected]’s takes on Twitter for highlighting of other issues with the piece). https://www.economist.com/interactive/interactive/briefing/2022/11/05/the-world-is-going-to-miss-the-totemic-1-5c-climate-target #climatejustice
The world is going to miss the totemic 1.5°C climate target

It needs to face up to the fact

The Economist

“…almost USD 2 billion per annum is being spent by rural households in Bangladesh to prevent and repair damage owing to climate change.

“Notably, the amount being spent is twice that of government spending per annum and twelve times more than contributions received from multilateral agencies.”

"...after getting the hang of it, I love Mastodon like I did Twitter a decade ago."

After using Mastodon for a week, I completely agree with this author, @maxeddy.

Here's his excellent (long!) explainer for those seeking to migrate.

#TwitterMigration

https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-get-started-on-mastodon-and-leave-twitter-behind

KEEP IN MIND! #Mastodon doesn't work like #Twitter!

Have you just made the #Twexit or the #TwitterMigration?

Favorites ⭐ - they're not "likes". They don't "elevate" posts, they just the poster know you liked their post.

Boosts 🔁 - these push someone's post into your friends feeds (and help discovery).

So if you ⭐ my posts, that's great (and I love you too)!

But if you 🔁 posts, then more people see them!

OH! - #Hashtags are how you search!

#mastodon #MastodonTips

Platforms like #Twitter, #Facebook, #LinkedIn etc are all business that NEED to grow since we, the user are the products.

Revenue should not be a goal of a social platform, there are enough websites out there already who squeeze you for every penny in some form.

The internet wasn't created for profit alone but it seems many have forgotten..

Let's bring that back!
