I think that was the point. You can choose not to share your information, and that should be the norm instead of the exception.

The options could just as well be interpreted as "I think it is reasonable for a partner to expect me to let them go through my device" and the opposite.

The "privacy matters" option is the equivalent to choosing not to share your information. Maybe I could has phrased the options differently.

As a privacy advocate, I consider phones and computers an extension of human thought and conscience. Some of us even keep our diaries on our devices.

That said, the sentiment I often encounter is that we hand over our devices at the demand of our partners if we "have nothing to hide". I'm not so sure I agree with this.

A private conversation is supposed to remain private . I trust my partner 100% and will never demand their device.

Thoughts?

In this golden age of surveillance, making E2EE chat normal and expected has been privacy's biggest win. I hate to see it getting rolled back. https://thehackernews.com/2026/03/meta-to-shut-down-instagram-end-to-end.html
Meta to Shut Down Instagram End-to-End Encrypted Chat Support Starting May 2026

Meta will end Instagram E2EE chats May 8, 2026, reversing a 2021 privacy test and reigniting debate over encrypted messaging oversight.

Abbaye de Villers

The ruins of an abbey founded in the 12th century and abandoned during the 18th century.

The church took roughly 70 years to build - a reminder of the magnitude of such architectural endeavors.

As I listen to the news of the recent global escalations, I pause from my glass of #duvel and my copy of Contact by #carlsagan to consider the following:

Sagan would be utterly disappointed by the state of our planet. Within Contact, he describes a planetary collaboration of unprecedented scale. The Soviets and the United States, along with many other nations, assemble to address a nascent phenomenon - the arrival of a message from another world.

We can do better
