It's no secret that I am not a fan at all of generative AI. I posted a meme earlier joking about how it is something abused to steal labor (or avoid paying it) by the ultra-wealthy and I got some criticism of "but generative AI does important things for human rights and accessibility, too!"
Of course it does. AI, ML, and generative AI in specific are tools. The people who conceived of them mostly had good intentions. It is a flaw of human nature and capitalism that new and robust technological tools are often leveraged for the worst possible money-making and people-oppressing schemes, especially when their creators don't have the ethical forethought to predict it. We see it with forensic and cybersecurity developments, all the time.
Lots of things that have mostly been purposed for evil by evil people still have some significant and important uses for societal good. Look at opioids. Cryptocurrency. Military explosives. Even social media. Me saying that those are tools that are primarily being used by corporations and the 1% to do Very Bad things and are contributing to the downfall of society doesn't take that away. They're tools that can be used or misused for certain tasks - none of them are magical or cursed.
We have to have conversations about the detriment, to try to create channels for them to be used but not misused.
Instead of sharing corporate studies about corporate programming environments, where developer happiness and productivity is usually just given lip service, I would rather listen to the voices of individual programmers who have reconnected with their joy of building for themselves.
The brutalist look of apps written with #llms #llm is a testament to that, imo. Itβs people building software for fun, without having to care about frameworks and corporatized resume driving open source .
4/4
I believe in a world where we can all acknowledge that a not insignificant group of people find AI useful and that tech companies big and small should be held to a higher degree of accountability and subjected to a healthy dose of skepticism and scrutiny.
Can we please stop with the absolutist takes in both directions? Superiority is fleeting, solidarity is way cooler.
So there's an anti-LGBTQIA+ list of queer games out there, and today I found out Hypnospace is on it. First of all what an honor tysm!!!! So I did what any far-left-queer-socialist-cat-dad would do and stole it and turned it into a positive!
Enjoy this list of over 700 (!!!) games that make creeps just so so angwy - plz do read the disclaimer at the top:
